3/17 IRISH QUEERS fight homophobia with culture!

category international | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Tuesday March 09, 2004 19:23author by JF Mulligan - Irish Queers (NYC)author email irishqueers at hotmail dot com Report this post to the editors

Stop the Irish government from sending an official representative to the bigoted parade.

S*U*P*P*O*R*T Y*O*U*R I*R*I*S*H Q*U*E*E*R*S*!

Irish queers have the same problem as queers in most immigrant communities --
while our community scrambles to assimilate into mainstream conservative U.S.
culture, our insistence on being both Irish AND queer challenges the American
Hetero Dream, which is very nervous-making to our immigrant communities.

So the big local muckety-mucks do the usual thing: first they denounce us, then
they try everything to pretend we don't exist. They put their normalness on
public display in the form of parades featuring -- instead of the rich culture
they came from -- military contingents, cop contingents, religious
contingents... (The weirdest part is that in Ireland, queers are singled out for
government *support*, and have never been excluded from a parade.) The erasure
of queers, and the homogenizing of our national cultures, does violence to us.
We protest!

Join Irish Queers in protesting our exclusion from the (admittedly very dull)
NYC St. Patrick's parade, this year with a big, fabulous performance which will
show parade-goers the difference between lame moralistic, militaristic
grandstanding and *actual* Irish culture!

Why do we care about the parade?

The NYC parade is the biggest, most public celebration of Irishness in the U.S.
It's broadcast on national television by NBC, gets more than $1m of City funds,
and is a photo-op for many politicians who claim (out of the other side of their
mouths) to be friends of queers. It has nothing to do with celebrating Irishness
anymore -- the organizers now call it "a triumph of traditional Catholic values
over homosexuality." The parade has excluded many different "undesirables" over
its history, including women, people of color, people in wheelchairs and Irish
independence activists. The parade is an icon of right-wing religious attempts
to cleanse Irish identity of queerness, Irish republicanism, feminism and other
diversities. It's our community's parade, and we belong in it.

" A triumph for Catholicism"?!?

C*nts! It is alright for them Freaks ( I refer to the organisors, not the Queers) to stand by an organisation that is one of the biggest paedo rings ever, but grown adults that are a little bit different from the rest of the cattle that is the dross of humanity are excluded from marching down a road. Nope, not Orangemen, but Pink Paddies!

Aye, Let me tell you this, my Pink friends. Nature will hurl the cancer ridden bigots into the abyss, and great sorrow will be their crop!
For one day, you will march the tarmac of New York, and perhaps even visit the graves of these old fools, and trample on their skulls!

Amen!

The parade organisers proclaim it to be "a triumph of traditional Catholic values". Well done lads, you've lost Ireland and 'taken' New York for a couple of hours on one day a year. Good luck to the queers but to be honest the longer you can keep the bigots busy over their with their 'triumph' the better it is for eveyone over here!

For added amusement consider the actual origins of the NY parade. I'd have guess that it was post 1798 when many of the Protestant leaders of the rebellion fled to New York including Thomad Adis Emmet (older brother of Robert). Paddys Day offered a way for the rebels to maintain a level of unity abroad with the other rebels 'of all religions and none' who arrived over the next 50 years. Certainly 'the wearing of the Green' was/is popular in such circles. Some quick googling hints that this guess is probably right, see http://www.phippscountry.com/stpatricks.htm

I think it is disgraceful that Sinn Féin is in receipt of thousands of dollars from a bigoted organisation like the ancient order of Hibernians. Just goes to show that Sinn Féin have no real commitment to LGBT rights.

I think their new slogan must be:

An Ireland of Equals (sponsored by bigots in the U.S.)

As you well know , SF get no money from the AOH. SF are wrong to participate (but they do oppose the ban on LGBT participation) in the parade but they have always been in the forefront of fighting for LGBT equality.

Article in the Belfast Telegraph by Sean O Driscoll published last August states that:

"Ancient Order of Hibernians: An independent group that bans gays from its St Patrick's Day parades has given tens of thousands of dollars to the pro-gay Sinn Féin. Its Atlanta branch gave $8,560 between November 1, 2000 and April 31, 2001. "

So if this isn't true maybe why haven't Sinn Féin sued the Telegraph?

Gerry Adams will be in New York on Sunday and for a $75 admission fee you get to hear him at a bar wtih a other suppossed republicans. Will anyone mention that republicans shoulldn't be supporting the Hibs and their parade? (This is the same shower that prevented Joe Doherty supporters, Bloody Sunday commeration committee, friends of Roisin McAliskey, from participating) Sinn Feins 'solidarity ' with bigots and their private hate fest speaks more to the integrity of Sinn Fein.

Would have been no harm if you had included more details, your article is a little bit short, 300 words would be about right.
If you are having difficulty uploading photos - they may be over the size limit. Anyway since they are already published elsewhere the link is sufficient and no need to publish them here.
