Have to take issue with you, neither Desmond nor Lone are worth the five orcs, even combined.
Good idea to start a new thread on it, or if a suitable thread arises to develop it. Will certainly contribute if it gets going, should make for an interesting weekend.

The homeland USA we shall leave aside, since it is a complex affair of local state and federal regimes, unsuitable for a pithy reflection on a thursday morning indymedia "hello". Rather let us consider those other nations and states that are administered by the USA as "commonwealth" territories.
Puerto Rico and Micronesia, Guam, Palau, american Samoa, US virgin islands and of course the Republic of Marshall island.
To be technical Republic of the Marshall Islands,
Federated States of Micronesia
and Republic of Palau are "freely associated republics" and the formers "integrated commonwealth dependencies and territories".
Let's consider the "micronesia block " first, these commonwealth territories of the USA extend in an arc across the pacific ocean, the last official state of the union being the archipelago of Hawaii

After that we find islands and archipelagos which were central to the WWII US war effort against Japan. Such evocative names as "midway".
There we find a very unusual level of ambient polution due to _nuclear testing_.
We also find a very un-usual level of employment and alcoholism. When in the mid-1980s these territories joined the USA, they did so with a lot of fanfare funding and really big air-strips were built. They make Knock airport look inchy. National Geographic magazine devoted half of one issue to the issues then facing these "newest" quasi-citizens of the USA.
(the other half of that issue focussed on the Soviet Space program and the monitoring of the Iraq/Iran front by Soviet spy sattelites which preceded the succesful Iraqi assault of autumn 1885 yawn yawn, it also carried a completely erronous account of the Soviet attempts to copy the space shuttle (design 1) which is another day's good morning how are all of ye doing comment.

Now conditions have not improved in the commonwealth territories of the pacific as much as they were supposed to, and we see that in the last twenty years only a handful of locals have made the previously much trumpeted "educational improvement grant maintained trip" to homeland universities.
Rather than islanders supporting the important military spin-off industries which serve the pacific arc of air and naval bases, we find an unusual amount of homeland citizens being shipped out to work these sites.

If you go visit the Pacific arc, I particularly recommend visiting "jumpers cliff" where several hundred Japanese soldiers commited suicide rather than surrender to US troops, an event which convinced the Pacific command that japanese resistance would be so resolute it probably would be quicker just to nuke them. This island is still very popular with Japanese tourists who account for most of Guam's economy to this day.

I would relish a debate on the regime nature of these "vassal states" & it really will be very easy as we are only going to consider twenty years history and political/economic development.

Lone gunman forgets he is speaking to people, who'eve dodged the shankill butchers, outwitted mad dog nazi Johnny Adair, dodged peaceline bricks and petrol bombs, survived living rough on the streets of north belfast and taken and given numerous kickings.

It was only last year, in the tiny republican east belfast enclave of Short strand residents were hand to hand street fighting with neo nazi loyalists who attempted to lay siege to the Short strand once again.

The ignorance and idiocy posted from some people here is amazing!
I always found the" toughest talkers" in any "hardman /women" group are the ones usually found in the back of the group egging everyone else on while they eye up the nearest exit. Thats when they are not pissing themselves with fear when they realise that they pushed once too far.

I think we have a great deal to fear from foreigners. Those who grew up in cosy suburbs should realise that there are many, many nasty people running nasty, nasty regimes and I think we have a lot to fear from them. Not to mention terrorist gangs.

That's why I am so grateful that we have a fearless, resolute POTUS who is not afraid to use force to defend our freedoms.

BTW, I agree that replacing one set of unsightly stickers with another is completely absurd. Some poor sod (worker) has to scrape them all off.

But anything would improve these Dublin Bus 'info' signs. Its not as if the stickers are obliterating any accurate and factual information. Any bus times displayed are either aspirational or total fiction. I nearly caught my death of cold waiting on buses over the past few days.

Doesnt matter whats on a sticker attached to a bus stop in the city. Its vandalism plain and simple. Now some poor schmuck employed by Dublin bus has to come along and remove them all regardless if they were posted by a nazi/treehugger/dogooder. Kinda hard on the poor fingers this time of year.

First of all, I have to admit that Im flattered by all the attention given to my rings - though that wasnt the purpose of the article.
Secondly, the emphasis here is on the removal of the stickers, not on the people who are doing it.I am involved in antiracism stuff (not only covert ones) and I dont mind having my photos taken+publicized.

Can't really imagine the local hitler fans going around checking what rings women are wearing, it would be too un-macho for them. They already feel their masculinity threatened, which in the first instance is probably why they need to engage in macho posturing.

It's a start, but stickers on bus stops are hardly going to change many opinions are they? Flyposting in crowded public places has much more of an effect. Emphasise the absurdity of racism and xenophobia, you'll most likely achieve more.
