Good anti-war meeting in Galway

category galway | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Sunday February 22, 2004 02:36author by John Cunningham - Galway Alliance Against War Report this post to the editors

Expressions of solidarity with Own Rice

158 admission tickets were issued at An Taibhdhearc for tonight's public meeting with Dr Stephen Cleghorn and Denis Halliday. (The organisers were delighted that anybody would turn up at a meeting on a Saturday night).

There were contrasting contributions from the platform -Halliday's focus was on the possibilities of reforming the UN; Cleghorn's on the predicament of US military families, and on the political mood in America.

The discussion afterwards was wide-ranging, but Owen Rice's incarceration and hunger strike was on most people's minds. A resolution of solidarity with Owen was passed unanimously, there was a collection for his defence fund, and individual messages of solidarity were gathered from many of those present.

Provisional arrangements were made to organise transport for the national demonstration in Dublin on 20 March.

Thats a great attendance for a Saturday night meeting. Well done.

Well done too on collecting some funds for Eoin's defence.

There is an urgent need to set up a national defence fund for all anti-war protestors who end up in prison. They are not receiving enuf financial support from us. There needs to be an organised, co-ordinated approach.

A certain K.Allen spoke from the floor promoting March 20 and managed to drop the word grassroots in several times.

author by Frankiepublication date Tue Feb 24, 2004 14:00author address Derryauthor phone Report this post to the editors

The Derry meeting with Stephen Cleghorn was not so well attended - Friday night not a great night for a meeting in Derry but there was a lively discussion. Stephen Cleghorn emphasised the need to organise for March 20th, a date which hasn't really caught the imagination of people here yet like Feb. 15th did last year. How are people elsewhere organising for March 20th? There is a rally in Belfast as well as Dublin and Derry ones are divided as to which they should attend.
