The BBC has run a story claiming UK spring temperatures are up 1.8?C. It's alarmist agitprop straight from a Green Blob press release and it doesn't check out when you look at the facts, says Chris Morrison.

Galway activists build for arrival of EU ministers

category galway | eu | news report author Friday January 09, 2004 19:38author by kieran - Another Europe is possibleauthor email kcunnane2003 at yahoo dot com Report this post to the editors

Another Europe is possible.

On Wednesday 7th Jan, a public meeting was held in Galway under the title "Another Europe is possible". Today's Irish Times covered the event and the forthcoming protest. Activists are also seen leafleting before the meeting. This would have been illegal, but for a recent victory for Defend Free Speech, Assembly and Activity on the right to leaflet.

March against war, racism, privatisation planned
Trade unionists, anti-war and human rights activists have planned a protest against "war, racism and privatisation" during next week's informal EU council of employment and trade ministers in Galway city, writes Lorna Siggins.

The protest is one of several which are expected to take place during the council, which will be hosted by the Tánaiste, Ms Harney, from January 15th to 17th. Although EU ministers and officials will convene outside the city centre in the Corrib Great Southern Hotel, they are due to attend a social evening close to Galway's Eyre Square on Friday evening - when the march will take place.
Some 70 representatives of anti-war and human rights groups, along with trade unionists, will argue that "another Europe" is possible. Speaking at a meeting in Galway earlier this week, Mr Richard Boyd Barrett, chairman of the Irish Anti-War Movement, called for a rejection of the idea that the EU should either align itself with the US, or become a rival economic and military power. Irish people should seek an alternative EU, which would be democratic and concerned with the welfare of its people, he said.
Mr Peter Butler of the Galway One World Centre expressed concern about EU trading practices, which he maintained had a detrimental effect on economies in developing states, while Ms Tríona nic Giolla Choille of the Galway Refugee Support Group said that recent developments had seen the "progressive dismantling of the rights of asylum". It was clear that "fortress Europe" was being strengthened, she said.
The safety implications and effects on working conditions of privatisation of the transport sector was highlighted by Mr Pat Keane, regional secretary of the Technical, Electrical and Engineering Union.
Mr Owen McCormack, a Dublin bus driver and member of the National Bus and Rail Union, said that he hoped to see a coalition of trade unionists, environmentalists and anti-racism groups emerge during the Irish EU presidency - similar to that in Seattle in the late 1990s, when people mobilised against the World Trade Organisation talks promoting privatisation of public services.
Meanwhile, the leading anti-EU campaigner, Mr Anthony Coughlan, has written to RTÉ alleging pro-EU bias in their recent selection of people interviewed about the proposed EU constitution. In an open letter to the Director General, Mr Cathal Goan, Mr Coughlan makes reference to "ex-Trotskyists who people the European Movement" and regard the nation state "as out of date and such concepts as national democracy and national independence as right-wing and therefore reactionary".

This is a meeting of ministers of Employment and Social policy.

I had my letter published in today's City Tribune.

Why I support protests outside ministerial meetings

Dear Editor,

The official Programme of the Irish Presidency of the European Union (which can be read at http://www.eu2004.ie/) tells us that the Irish Presidency will facilitate the further development of the EU's military capabilities. This will mean more military spending at a time when we are witnessing cut-backs in social welfare and CE schemes, and sick and disabled people and their families are suffering because of the lack of medical care and support services.

The official Irish Programme talks about 'making work pay' but in reality it is about making workers pay. Working conditions look set to be attacked under the motto of encouraging greater adaptability and flexibility. 'Liberalisation' (privatisation) of rail should have us looking forward to a more expensive, worse and a more dangerous service (as the experience in Britain has shown). If you are looking forward to retirement at an age where you might still get some enjoyment out of it, you can think again. It looks like they will be 'reforming' the national pensions systems to make people stay in work longer. And as for promoting 'the principle of equal treatment between women and men in access to and supply of goods and services', why then did they decide to phase out the crèche supplement? Environmental and social considerations regarding the regulating of chemicals will just have to be 'balanced' with economic considerations. And, what is this about the Irish Presidency progressing the discussions on the establishment of an International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor ?

The programme of the Irish government for the EU presidency contains blatant attacks on our welfare. I would urge everyone to protest outside the ministerial meetings on Friday the 16th to make their voice heard.
Yours Sincerely,
Orla Ní Chomhraí
Galway.
