No matter what they do, no matter what populist policies they dream up, FG are going to crash in the local and Euro elections. History is cruel but there is just no space in the spectrum for them now. Their social and political role is played out. I know the YFGers will cry foul and 'we are all revived now' but Im afraid the game is over. It will take a few more elections and maybe a leader or two more before the ediface finally crumbles but crumble it will. This will lead to a major realignment in Irish politics, which can only be agood thing. It willl be interesting to watch how the FG ruralrump realigns.

Prediction for the summer elections: decimation in Dublin and barely holding their own in the rest of the country, followed by the inevitable leadership crisis.

The Irish electorate are conservative by instinct. FG has been in the doldrums because Bertie was untouchable. However, Bertieboy as lost his shine so FG and Labour will form the next government.

Labour are also seen as conservative, so are deemed acceptable by the Irish voter.

On the other hand, extreme leftwing groups have no futre in Ireland this century. Wait till the oil runs out and the wind generators stop turnung, then we might have the sort of social disorder which produces government with extremist, simpleminded solutions to complex problems..

Waiting until the oil runs out might be construed as simple-minded in the extreme, but I understand the cost of auto insurance is so much more important. Lucky we have a group of people like YFG around to show us the *moderate* simpleminded solution to complex problems.
btw, Why would the wind turbines stop turning? Are we going to run out of wind too? I would suggest employing YFG as an invaluable source of hot air in the decades to come...

To write off the Irish people as conservative by instinct is very wrong. Undoubedly in many rural areas people are conservative and will nearly always vote FF/FG/Labour but this does not mean that things can change. Any way, I think the crucial group of voters is the urban working class particularly the youth, this is the largest growing and most important section of the population. Amongst these people FG are one of the smallest parties. FG only have 3 TDs in Dublin. unless Fg or any party for that matter can get votes in Dublin they are finished

Does any change of consequence occur when the reigns of leadership pass between either Fianna Fail, Fine Gael or Labour?

"Does any change of consequence occur when the reigns of leadership pass between either Fianna Fail, Fine Gael or Labour?"

Not really, the style changes. Under Fianna Fail the 'Brown Paper Bag' style is to the fore, while under Fine Gael/Labour the style tends toward 'Mercs & Perks', with an interesting little sideshow of grassroots FGers clamoring for more "Law & Order" while their Labour counterparts spew out rhetoric about poverty at the same time they are implementing right-wing economic policies.
Most people who appear to vote *for* either combination are in fact voting to prevent the others getting in. It comes down to deciding which government would be the lesser of two evils.

Nothing changes when the leaderhsips of the FG/FF/Labour/PD parties change as they are all right wing capitalist parties. Nothing would change either if Labour or Fg were in power. They may put on a different spin and change their rhetoric a bit but fundamentally they represent the same interests in society, the capitalist class. All these parties will lay the boot into the working class.

In the next elections I would say people should vote for candidates and parties with a proven record of fighting for the working class. Not those that will take money off big business and abandon their class once elected. If there is no working class candidate in your area, don't choose a lesser fo two evils. Abstain AND get active in your community and trade unions in order to build a real alternative

The question, being rhetorical, served only to highlight the growing disillusionment with the establishment. Far from becoming active, the majority of those who are thusfar disillusioned have decided that getting involved usually ends up rejoining an established way and those individuals find that to do nothing is more often than not in their best interests. The logic seems not altogether sound but this is the trend and no standard political party or organistaion no matter how radical is going to significantly alter the mindframe of the ordinary individual who is beginning to equate democracy with hypocrisy, manipulation and deceit.

The Health Service Survey,of Dr Sean Barrett-a Trinity College economist-,recently published ;is a shocking indictment of a government which will surely be remembered for its unprecedented and systematic network of organized corruption;-its chameleon like mastery of the art of “public relations” and deception;- its astounding bluff and arrogance in the face of exposure;and its utter incompetence in managing the Nations affairs, whether it be infrastructure projects, public health,or just plain old waste disposal!
It ought not be lost on the electorate that some 40% of them are also paying, double digit-yearly price escalating, private health insurance. They are, in effect, a cow being milked twice ,-on public taxation, and private desperation!(V.H.I).The abundance of new” stealth taxes,”besides! The most despairing fact in all of this is the absolute lack of a credible alternative coalition government to the Fianna Fail/P.D Alliance. It is indeed a Dark Age for Politics in the small Nation of Ireland. How dare Bertie Ahearn lecture us about” the need to pay for services”Its akin to a mugger, telling his victim, that he is obliged to pay for his Heroin habit -or a bank robber telling the account holders that they must finance his extravagant lifestyle!
