Fintan Lane Update (17th December 2003) & Financial Appeal

category national | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Wednesday December 17, 2003 18:48author by Dominic Carroll - Cork Anti-War Campaign / Clonakilty Against the Warauthor email corkantiwar at hotmail dot comauthor phone 087 1258325 Report this post to the editors

Fintan Lane is serving a 60-day prison sentence in Limerick Prison for his refusal to pay a €750 fine imposed on him for his part in a peaceful protest at Shannon Airport in October 2003.

Fintan Lane has now served 22 days of his 60-day sentence. He is in good form and looking forward to a 36-hour Christmas release. He will be released on Christmas Eve and will return to prison on St Stephen’s Day. His sentence will run until 25th January.

Fintan has expressed gratitude to all who have written to him in prison. These cards and letters, he says, have been vital in helping him cope with the harsh conditions of prison. He intends to reply to all who have written to him, though it may take some time as the number of letters he can post from prison in any one week is restricted. If you haven’t already written to express solidarity with Fintan, and wish to do so, please write to him at the following address:

Fintan Lane
E Wing
Limerick Prison
Mulgrave Street
Limerick

Even if you’ve already written to Fintan, please write to him again. Just as importantly, please write a letter to the newspapers (local and national) to express your opposition to his imprisonment and to the use of Shannon Airport by the US military. A number of letters have already been published in various papers, and it’s important to keep both Fintan’s jailing and the illegal use of Shannon in the public eye.

Cork Anti-War Campaign, which is co-ordinating the campaign around Fintan Lane, has launched an appeal to raise much-needed money for the specific purpose of financing the campaign surrounding his imprisonment. If you wish to make a donation to the campaign, please lodge money into the campaign account and let us know details of your donation by contacting the campaign at 087 1258325 or [email protected]

There were two pieces on Fintan in today's Irish Times. I did an interview in Radio na Life (Dublin) and they asked me about it.

This letter was published in yesterday's (17th December 2003) Irish Times and Irish Examiner:

WE, the undersigned, wish to register our protest at the imprisonment of our fellow Irish historian, Fintan Lane, and join in the call for his immediate release. Fintan is serving a sixty-day sentence for his conscientious refusal to pay a fine arising from his participation in a peaceful protest at Shannon airport against the facilitation of the US military by the Irish government.
