Athens has just passed sentance on 15 members November17.

with the words "I think the chapter of terrorism in Greece is finally over," Michalis Tsinisizelidis, political science professor at Athens University has led reaction to the long awaited trial in the wider english speaking world.

Three judges delivered the verdicts at the end of a marathon trial involving 19 accused members of November 17. The defendents were placed in custody between 15 and 16 months ago. There was no jury because terrorism charges were involved.
4 were found not guilty, Iincluding the wife of the convicted chief assassin.

Three judges delivered the verdicts at the end of a marathon trial involving 19 accused members of November 17. There was no jury because terrorism charges were involved.

The 15 guilty were convicted of nearly 2,500 crimes ranging from murder to possession of arms, bank robberies and membership of a criminal organization.

The leader of the group Alexandros Giotopoulos, 59, was convicted of 961 of 963 charges. Including 19 murders. Giotopoulos was well known in Greece as his father was a key member of the Trotskyist party.

November 17 claimed 23 killings in all, starting with Athens CIA station chief Richard Welch in 1975, and eluded police until a bungled bombing in 2002. It was thought by many that they had disbanded. But with the assasination of a British military ataché (Saunders 2000) their profile was raised again and Greece won the support of many Western States in it's post September 11 "war on terror". It would be disingenious not to suggest that many recent occurences of oppression, breaches of human, judicial and civil rights in the Greek state found as their "justification" the continuing dis-articulation of November 17.
And it is very necessary to understand the currents that have prosecuted that "dis-articulation" of a marxist armed grouplet that emerged during the military junta, whose memory still divides the Greek people. It is necessary to ponder because those same currents have likewise had an excessive effect on completely unrelated cases.

The present mayor of Athens and host of next year's Olympics, Dora Bakoyiannis spoke earlier today:

"Greek justice spoke today. Its decisions are respected by all," she said. "But our people will not be coming back."

Her husband was killed by the group in 1989.

It would be hypocritical not to write that many times Greek society has found itself on the "terrorist" list. Like in Ireland amongst other countries, the same root causes of poverty and inequality have found fertile ground with potent other causes of conflict and twisted bitter roots. But unusual amongst European countries Greek "terror" had an anti-American strategy. Between 1975 and 1991 five US services personel or diplomats were killed, but the Greek authorities have ruled out any extradition of the November 17 group to the USA.

It is a sign of other problems that this last weekend the international Greek community have had to come to terms with the fatal shooting of a youngman who ran a roadblock in Crete, and a racist attack on Greeks in Germany which resulted in two deaths.

Greek society appears to be one that has sadly internalised much violence in it's modern history, one of our European partners that more than any other appears to be "having certain problems adjusting" to the 21st century. But one group composed of such people as an academic, a family trotskyist, four sons of an Orthodox priest, an odd jobs man, and a beekeeper are confined to "history".

Finally Of the 7 detainees still held in Greece, known as "The Thessalonika 7" three are of particular concern to us, the British theologian Simon Chapman, and two Spanish Citizens Carlos Martín and Fernando Pérez.

These three individuals all went on hunger strike, have lodged formal complaints of maltreatment and torture, and are suffering serious ill health after the ordeal.
It ought now be _very clear_ that their cases were complicated by domestic Greek Security concerns.

We are continuing our campaign for their unconditional release and hope that they shall be allowed to visit their respective countries for the holiday season.
We are also seeing a new campaign highlighting the very difficult living conditions in Greek cities, which along with northern Spain and Eastern Ireland have seen the greatest increase in property prices since the introduction of the €uro. It seems foolhardy and vain, to further fuel these property bubbles and their associated social marginalisation and inequality by placing projects such as Olympics 2004 ahead of .... "the basics of social concern".

So that ought to be clear.

With the conviction of 15 members of the Greek radical left November 17 group, the Greek government may appear entitled to celebrate the demise of one of the most effective and impenetrable “terrorist” groups to have emerged in Europe since the end of the Second World War.
The relief to afforded to the Greek government by the apparent emasculation of Nov. 17 is doubly welcome as the British and American Governments had been pressurising Greece to crush Nov 17 following a series of attacks on their military personnel stationed in Greece. The most recent assassination, that of Northern Ireland dirty war supremo Stephen Saunders was in retaliation for the illegal NATO bombing assault against Yugoslavia and raised the hackles considerably.

The intelligence services of any of these countries can hardly deserve to slap themselves on the back for any success in stopping Nov 17 as the discovery of it’s bases, equipment and personnel all stemmed from a botched bomb attack in Piraeus which left one member injured. Four days of “interrogation” produced information leading to the discovery of Nov 17 HQ in Athens and from the on it was all standard plod work.

As the curtain falls on Nov 17 for possibly the last time, the following listing provides a breakdown of the victims of Nov 17 and shows how effectively their victims were targetted;

British Military ------------------------------ 1
CIA ------------------------------------------- 1
Civilian ---------------------------------------1
Greek Government -----------------------2
Industry/Business magnates ---------6
Police ----------------------------------------1
Riot Police---------------------------------- 3
Turkish Govt. ------------------------------ 2
US Military ---------------------------------- 5

As Americas wars of revenge continue to cause the deaths of men, women and children posing zero military threat any comparative analysis of deaths caused by US armed forces in Afghanistan and Iraq would certainly reflect unfavourably on Ameriica, but of course such a comparison would be invalid as they are fighting FOR freedom against terror.

Gang leader Alexandros Giotopoulos, who got a record 21 life sentences, assassin Dimitris Koufodinas - nicknamed "Poison Hand" for his point-blank, gun killings - and 13 other members were sentenced a total of thousands of years in prison.

"This is like a school reunion," one of a few dozen prosecution lawyers said. "It is as if they are seeing old classmates."

November 17, which took its name from the date of a crushed 1973 student uprising against the then-ruling military junta, killed Greek businessmen, politicians and U.S., British and Turkish diplomats.

Its last victim was British defence attache Stephen Saunders, gunned down on his way to work in June 2000. Jobless mathematics professor Giotopoulos, 61, is the son of Greece's most famous Trotskyite. A 1960s student radical in Paris, he has long protested his innocence, calling the trial a "U.S.-inspired theatre".]

at 6am this morning a bomb detonated at the Greek Economy Ministry offices in Athens. No one was killed, but 2 people were seriously injured and extensive damage caused.

Of course if you read the whole thread you'll know that "Greek terrorism" in the form of N17 is supposed to be completely wrapped up, done and dusted, "appeal or not". Unsurprisingly therefore Greek authorities are not aportioning blame at this stage.
