New Look For Indymedia

category national | indymedia ireland | news report author Tuesday November 25, 2003 14:38author by Vinnie - Indymedia Ireland Tech Group Report this post to the editors

Graphic Designers Needed

As you may have noticed by now, Indymedia has a new look and feel. We hope you like it and if you spot any problems or have any comments please let us know through the contact form. The latest version of the software will be available for download within the week.

As well as the obvious change in the look of the site, it now has further customisation/localisation so that each topic or region or combination thereof can have its own banner logo and colour scheme.

At the moment however none of these custom banners are configured and thats why we need the help of any budding graphic designers out there. What we want are people to design banner logos for individual topics and regions and combinations thereof eg A Galway banner, An Environment banner, and a Galway Environment banner. All combinations are not necessary but the more the merrier. We will extrapolate an appropriate colour scheme if deemed necessary from any banners submitted. Using county colours may be a good idea but don't feel constrained by them if you have other ideas.

The guidelines for submitting graphics are as follows:

  1. All submissions should be sent in a zip file to [email protected]
  2. Preferred format is a multi layered psd file, which will enable us alter it slightly if required. gifs, pngs or jpgs will be accepted also.
  3. Images must have the following dimensions - width 418 pixels height 60 pixels. The width may may vary slightly if required but the height may not.
  4. Preferably the images should fade to white on left hand side unless you have a good reason for not doing so.
  5. Images must contain in words some reference to the region or topic its related to unless you have a good reason for not doing so.
  6. Images must be politically neutral where possible. Images may not contain party logos or slogans or symbols espousing any particular political ideologies.
  7. The decision to use an image is entirely at the discretion of the editorial mailing list (which you can join)
  8. Please do not be offended if your image is not used, as the choice will be a matter of aesthetics which can vary widely from person to person, so don't take it personally.
Looking forward to your submissions!

please make it so that when we save pages the title and the story number automatically enter the filename line - this makes archiving and checking back on stories of interest that much simpler - if you can get this to work you will be ever known as Vinnie The Wizard, and I'll buy you a pint - can any other reader offer a fairer bribe than that?

Will Indymedia still practice censorship or will freedom of expression be now permitted on this website?

Will Ray delete any itmes that he doesn't like?

What I wrote was no way offensive.

I was just stating a different view to the prevailing anarchist view of the editors of Indymedia.

I guess there are some people would rather not hear the truth.

Good work indeed. Some of the other Indymeida's around the world should start using your software.

Now Daithi, we only check about 140 times a day for new discussions, now come on!

I still have a bit of problem with the Events section though. When someone posts a new event, I feel there needs to be a way to get this to people's attention fully. For at least ONE DAY anyhow. At present when someone posts a NEW event I feel it is getting lost in the events calender and is not receiveing a wide readership.

But I will make my comments on this more specifically and in more detail to the editorial group.

Good work again.

site looks great,
i think its a pity that you have got rid of the satelite image of ireland, i think its v important to be reminded of our place: earth.

indymedia is more than a website, imc-ie has to expand, inform more of what it is, give them skills to use it, more and more

is there any plans for a combined screening and workshop? i gave a short imc workhsop last saturday.

some people were talking of going out to the community garden in ballyfermot, do some gardening, do a feature,
while out there a screening and workshop could be given in the public library.

anyone interested, perhaps this could be talked about tonight at the public get together?

Lovely big "i" for "iosaf" over one island without borders. I was thinking about it's absence yesterday, and i suppose with the elections many of us can't vote for today, it was really "tactful ·of that bunch over in indymedia...", to hide it for a while...
Could someone in the really "·clever bunch over in indymedia" post the gif/jpg/image of Ireland "I" [for indymedia] as a comment?
I reckon loads of us would like it as a poster.

I really look forward to seeing what the graphic designers will do, there's loads of ability and talent in Irish print "underground" media [those that get over to Bçn] so come on! get your ideas on these pages...

Indymedia.ie keeps getting better and better! Thanks Vinnie and friends - you're the biz!

I can't contribute much except suggestions - so here's a few:

-Bring back the Ireland IMC graphic (even if its shrunken a bit).

-Put the list of other IMCs back in the left-hand column. They are easier to get at there, easier to use, and there's nothing in the column anyway.

-Re-arrange the list of 'regions' into alphabetical order - its easier to find the one you want that way.

-Add an 'email this page to a friend' feature so users can mail a page (or link to a page) to others, directly from this site. This can do wonders for outreach.

-Add a feature so that users can recommend or vote on a story. Users could then have an option to order stories by the number of votes.

Its brilliant the way it is, tho!

author by Mr. Author Namepublication date Wed Nov 26, 2003 20:33author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Oh yeah, I forget.

A donate to Indymedia.ie page would be brilliant too.

If there was an easy way to donate to Indymedia.ie it would be brill too.

Money for hosting, leaflets, promotion, outreach - just think of it.

Any money is better then none

I have have two suggestions -

First - is Green text on a Green background (ie commentary and the right headlines) 'colour-blind' friendly? Personally, its a bit hard on my eyes, but I can live with it.

Second, I was hoping that you would enable limited html or EZboard tags use in stories & comments (even just to be able to use 'img' and 'a href' tags, which would enable external photo-linking - thus saving space on the server). It would also cut out horrible links, which I persoanlly find astethically disgusting.

Besides that, excellent job.

Well done on the new look. It definitely makes the events section more accessible. I think people will cotton on to 'commentary' soon enough. Coupla minor points:

Not sure the EU merits a whole section on its own (future).
Same with Irish Social Forum, not exclusively related to it either.

More importantly, could the font be a little bigger, or at least give us the option of increasing it.

Lines between features also would be helpful I think.

author by 1 of IMCpublication date Thu Nov 27, 2003 17:40author address author phone Report this post to the editors

You can set the fonts bigger by clicking on the "[text size >>]" link at the bottom of every page, beneath the listing of all the worldwide IMCs

author by dunkpublication date Thu Nov 27, 2003 18:00author email duncancrowley at hotmail dot comauthor address author phone Report this post to the editors

you have existing lists: editorial, vid, tek...
i suggest you make an - outreach- list
and with that we (whoever indymedia is) opens up, allows for new layers to be added to it, evolves in what ever way it could.

more people should know about and use indymedia.

i want to work in this area, and am already doing so, but it is essential that it expands.

it still rocks today though, just could do more

author by dunkpublication date Thu Nov 27, 2003 18:35author address author phone Report this post to the editors

bring back the upcoming events that you had previously on the left

still think the posting of an event should go out on newswire, as it is lost (and more so now with new structure) in the events area

perhaps also a color code, maybe red- to differentiate between past and upcoming events.
maybe im lazy but i think it would help.

imc- focus more and communicate more re publicising and outreach side of things.

ie ballyfermot workshop??

author by dunkpublication date Tue Dec 02, 2003 17:48author address author phone Report this post to the editors

imc
can you respond to some of these suggestions made

are you thinking of implementing any of them

can you respond to the -public side- of imc

a good suggestion was made at the ISF, create a ranting section.

if people go on with the normal, unproducitive, annoying slagging- "your a SWP, bolix" send their post to the rant section.

this might clear up a lot of the discussions

see you wed????

author by Terrypublication date Tue Dec 02, 2003 19:05author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Funk,

I doubt people would stick to a separate ranting section. And it wouldn't cure the trolls, because their whole point is to disrupt things.

author by dunkpublication date Tue Dec 02, 2003 19:23author address author phone Report this post to the editors

presently the editors clean the site- move stuff they feel goes against the rules of indymedia- this stuff is in a far away part of indymedia-

so if there was the normal bulshit moaning slagfest, the posts that are not contributing anything positive to the topic but just annoying everybody, i suggest these be moved and a line in red saying something like "posts moved to ranting section" with the link, so that those interested in nothing but slagging could do so without pissing the rest of us off?

perhaps a trial period could be tried out?
