republicans are key.

category international | politics / elections | news report author Monday November 17, 2003 12:06author by iosaf mac diarmada Report this post to the editors

the Catalan Reublican Party holds the key to the Catalan Government after yesterday's elections.

There will be a coalition. No party has won enough to govern alone. The majority of votes passed went to the Left. The ERC esquera republican catalan, left republican catalan independence party has won 23 seats and is key.

The final results show:

ERC - Catalan Republican Left Independence.
23 seats. up 11 @ 16.47% of votes cast.

ICV-EUIA Green marxist Socialist alliance (fraternal links with ireland's swp)
9 seats. up 6 2 7.30% of votes cast.

PSC- Catalan version of PSOE Spain's "labour party"
42 seats. down 10 @ 31.17% of votes cast.

CiU- ruling centre right party regionalist conservative.
46 seats down 10 @ 30.93% of votes cast.

PP- catalan branch of Aznar's PP.
15 seats up 3 @ 11.87% of votes cast.

So left wing parties ranging from centre to marxist leninist with ecological and nationalist agenda have accomplished 54.95% of votes. 74seats.
The Right have achieved 42% of votes 61 seats.

The last ditch electioneering pitched the PSC "labour equivalent" guaranteeing housing solutions and combating speculation to the Right wing's combined thrust for older votes with promises of increased pensions and security.

The parties have till December to sign their pacts and make a government, but Josep Lluís Carod-Rovira leader of the ERC is most certainly the man who will decide the next government. Carod-Rovira who served a lengthy prison sentance for being a republican independentist during the Franco era declared last night to supporters cries of "Independence!" that a coalition with the CiU is unthinkable whilst they are so clearly associated with the PP of Aznar in Madrid.

******************************************

Other news from Spain, 150,000 people gathered for the first anniversary of the Prestige oil tanker disaster. Nunca Mais! is now a year old and saw many thousands of volunteers who came to together to clean over a thousand kilometres of beaches of Europe's worst ecological disaster in recent history coem together to remember and repeat Nunca Mais! Never Again!

The occupied autonomous arts centre Les Naus,
http://sindominio.net/lesnaus/ has yet not been evicted, though it's order was signed for over two weeks ago. It was felt that the bailiffs had been held back due to the elections. The collective had previously written to the local political representatives who are ERC, it now remains to be seen how the victory of the ERC may best be enjoyed by the relationship shared by the Left in Barçelona and Catalonia in general.
More people opted to vote this time than at any Catalan election since the 1920s, but of those who did not vote, their opinion is clear, and will continue to enjoy influence.

-I'll update the results as comments in the future.

back page of "la voz de galizia" daily newspaper established in 1882.
little thought...
"we always vote the same"

inside: two scenarios.
Republicans join with the centre right.
Now this might work because ERC said "catalúnya" lots and so did the CiU in all their campaigning, but they meant different things by what they said. Their leader today declared a great victory for Catalonia (the tradition here that is called sobranism and means -"negoci es negoci" [business is business]) But ERC have moved a bit more in those respects and late in the campaign adopted Catalonia and "benificence" opting for much needed rant-chant on housing and important stuff. What I like to call "the basics". And thus they decided to pose two conditions on such a coalition with a slogan (loads of slogans) Catalúnya "Lliure i neta"= "Catalonia free and clean".
So,.. CiU would have to cancel the nasty government contracts they hold and sever with Madrid. In writing, signed and probably sent by registered post with lawyers making a few cents.
Or else Senor Carod will not go into government with them "because we must learn the lesson of 23 years of CiU government.
The CiU of course being happy they got more deputies and the legacy of the former president Jordi Pujol whom I used call Maestro Yoda seemingly _assured_ ? [Perhaps in the farseeing way of securing position as the largest party of those who vote even if lots are voting for every else they deel reassured as being the ·party of government·]
It is indeed then interesting to note that most of the voters who went and gave ERC their 23 seats were youngsters. (voting against their mammy's and daddy's).
You know how it goes, and because this is Catalonia the surreality of all gives you two number "23"s.

In Galicia the newspaper sees it as a victory for nationalists and muses on the "stablisation of the nationalist vote". From Galicia, Catalonia looks different, just like Ireland looks different from Catalonia. (by the way).
Buckingham Palace looks the same from whatever way you look at it especially if you're myopic old eager and respectable. http://www.lavozdegalicia.es/inicio/index.htm
the votes for nationalist parties in the regions of Spain who vote for nationalist parties has been:
2001 galicia 2001 22.43%
2001 Basque 52.9%
2003 Catalonia 47%
Now that's if you count the parties of the centre right nationalist just like the parties of the left nationalist.
And now tis crunch time, which is more important, the "left" bit of "ERC" or the "catalan" bit. I presume to breach any journalistic pretension by suggesting that the little youngsters will sit next to others than their parents @ least for another few years.
Closer to the Galician home, the figures of attendance for the Nunca Mais! concentration were argued over by city council and police and demonstrators.
A qoute from the addresses.
{from the nine waves}
Memory, Security, Liberty, Pride, A constructive wave and that of Hope.

in the galician language:
"o pobo gaego emerxen do naufraxio e demostrou grandes reservas de civismo e de esperanza"

=
"The Galician people emerged from the sinking and demostrated great reserves of civism and hope"

From Madrid
It looks different.
The PP gained voters and seats. The CiU who under Pujol have won their seventh election in terms of seats if not votes. [Though the PSC got more votes it did get slightly fewer seats].
They have already wheeled out their own little ladies of the party and in a double statement of the Right and it's true constituency, today PP members warned of the threat to Spain ["España"] being posed by the PSOE of Zapatero (in Madrid) if they go into coalition in Catalonia with a Republican as well as the really annoying marxist greenies.
The other special forces were the council of Bsihops who decided to pick today to warn that the Lehandakari's (taoiseach's) plans for the Basque were a threat to Spain ["España"]

This tells you many things.
Spain "España" is made of strong stuff.
& so it is.
So is Italy, and doesn't really need all the uniforms to be strong, and this really is where some older people have gone really very wrong.
[the youth vote is rubbing off on me] We _DO NOT NEED MORE STRONG LEADERS_.

and now to the interesting bits:
¿how many people did ·not vote·?
In 1999 46% of registered sufrages were exercised.
In 2003 63.62% of registereed sufrages were exercised.
so 36%.62 of possible votes didn't happen.
and it is "possible" that many were young people as well. Just in case you wondered.

One final note was the absence of substantial votes for ultra right groupings, which means a variety of things, one of which is most definetly that that section of society has for the moment diffused it's franchise in other larger parties.
It is far too soon to presume that all such sentiment and the xenophobia that is it's constant companion are to be found in only one section.

Joan Saura leader of the ICV-EUa an interesting little party "the green intiative for Catalonia and united left with alternative", not too distantly related to either the pan-european greenies (but more left) or the pan-european marxists (just like the swimmies).
I'm sure loads of people in implication aware sussed Irish politics took note that ICV increased their seats by 200%. They got 9 seats up six, which is indeed worthy of comment, their slogan was "change left coz you must" or something like that.
Anyway they've taken first position in reminding everyone that greenie things are best done with lefty consideration, and that elections are really complex things, and that they get along really well with PSC and ERC in Barcelona where they have controlled the council since the May municipal elections.
I don't know what to say, I'm a foreigner, but I reckon they're sort of nice, because I see them regularly on all the same protests and their councillors came out of the Council building the day of their investiture to ask the anarkistys to keep the pantomime to media/established friendly parameters. The anarkistys marking the Martin Shaw debacle with the Swiss State by dressing up in "Liar!" sashes and making their own little investiture procession that significantly the police prevented from entering Government buildings.

Anyway interesting group these ICV people.

evicted CSOA Les Naus. and so ended ten years of theatre, co-operation, computer activist, artactivism, circus and autonomous stuff.
TAZ means temporary autonomous zone.
and temporary doesn't mean permanent.

eviction = Occupation.
