I brought this up before (a rant on the whole thesis-antithesis argument) but its been a while now and can't remember what article it was in. I notice that IMC UK have altered their use of the term simply to globalisation.
in terms of communication, it is a label that could be dropped so as to open up the ideas of the justice or democracy movement to the public, many who are not willing to engage with the 'anti-globalisation' movement are in that position as a result of the media's (re)production of the stereotype (much like the attempts to illicit fear by way of the 'infiltration of anarchists' in the bin tax campaign by O'Reilly's crowd, and thus to undermine it in the minds of those who believe anarchists to be fire and muck-throwing barbarians from some uncivilised, remote end of the earth...like Roscommon...), and I for one am sick of hearing the term because it is something which has been defined by those who are antidemocratic.
have we lost the power to define ourselves? what is the purpose in maintaining the use of a negative label?
And before you say it, I wish I had the time to join and respond to the editorial mailing list where I could debate this further. But as I don't I'm limited to this forum.
(sorry for taking your space dunk, but i didn't think my rant was worth an article and yours was the closest in terms of relevance.)
Dunk, you didn't include a date! I'm guessing it's tomorrow, but mail the editorial list if I'm wrong.
yes its today, sat 15th nov 2003
sorry for that, earlier post v rush job at work
its on today
should be good
IMC have taken the thread i put on the newswire off, i think the events should be on newswire, as they are news- i think this is being sorted?
we will see how things develop
re "globalisation and anti globalisation"
i think it is a wrong sentance in the first place, the g word is not correct in this context
i believe globalisation is an inevitable process in the evolution of human civilisation on this planet, ie we are communicating with each other more and more- its a natural process
what is bad at the moment is the rules of the game of global economics. there are rules which are governing how people live and how our home, planet earth, is treated. more and more people are becoming aware of this and also learning what they can do to improve things.
this is a creative process, seattle 99 showed us this.
joe stiglitz, who got the nobel prize for economics and who was the main man in the world bank has said all this- globalisation is inevitable, today the rules are bad we have to make them better-
how do we do this?
getting more people aware of whats going on and from that doing things to improve matters
how do you get more invovled?
if its exciting, if it brings further meaning or relevance to ones life?
an example of this
berlin 1989- frustrated at all the uncreative and boring protests that were anti this, anti that
150 heads got together for a free techno street party FOR tolerance, understanding and respect between nations.
10 years later and it had blossomed into the berlin lover parade with 1.5 million people dancing on the streets
just 1 example
my friend cant speak, so we communicate by writing and im learning sign
last night we made a new word
communication is exciting, its also fun, its also hugely unexplored by this movement(whatever this movement is)
hope to have a nice wander in an hour or two

ps on a final note
if people could help me get more of europes architectural community aware of these "global issues" it would be appreciated

@ 5 of us met up in ilac library, looked at space- v good facilities- exhibion spaces, room for talks films, computers for indymedia workshops.
Went to red lantern Chinese shop, some lovely food, something different, something exciting,
“talk is cheap” phone shop, classic name, buzzing place
henry st, wolfe tone park, pears from street trader, la vente mundial de los aventureros (the world window of the adventurers) risa a la Milanese, cobblestone: music pints, great talk and laughter, strangers become friends. Party

sandymount beach, chat, playing with phi drawn on beach (@ 15m x 10m) handstands, sunset, pigeon house industrial land and irishtown nature park. Isa`s gaf, music and chat
some things
SCUMALUM- name for punk band, “is Cuma liom” irish for “I don’t care” state of not caring about bullshit views of others, being open, sharing ideas, jokes, meals, dreams, life
Art as process- today art is seeing as pretentious bullshit because most of it is, art gallery are not v exciting today.
Change this, art as process, open and growing, allows for many inputs, mix of stuff leads to new outputs. Those outputs; plays, films, books, street theatre, paintings, poems, wanders, stories are created by fun inclusive process. Open to all
Blurring line between politics and culture, DOING stuff matters.
Why- sense of life, we are creative creatures, today things are boring, things are changing
Network age- @2000-3000 agora in Athens, philosophers, thinkers, traders gathered together and discussed things, were ALIVE, played with ideas, from this western civilisation developed- this led to “western world” now having unbalanced hold on world and its people.
How is this changing- technology is developing, ideas are flowing again, people are remembering they are alive, celebrating this, learning about bad stuff, doing stuff to counter this- nodes are being created all over the place- new systems, indymedia and world social forums being best examples, are acting as the needle and thread that is weaving an ever growing web, connecting these nodes, the network is becoming healthier.
Networks are challenging unjust systems and having fun doing it. People want to get involved with this, as it brings sense of connection to life, real, serious and fun together.
Water is good, its calming.
Why do people not get involved?
Afraid of new stuff, peer pressure, feel lost, unable to get connected?
Give it a blast
thanks to those who made weekend la pute fuckin madray???

that`s a project in conflict resolution through painting, that we made in Bilbao last year.
I`ve the stuff in spanish but i`ll try to translate it in english.
The subject is the Reinvention of the world with the only way of the painting between one group of people.

I agree with Lars Rubenco:
"is there any chance IMC Ireland will begin to change its policy on using the mass-media assigned label "anti-globalisation"? "
The left generally used to refer to themselves as 'Internationalists'. It is only in the last few years that we have been using the term "anti-globalisation". I'm not sure who started doing so, but it does fit in with the capitalist agenda to portray themselves as being open and progressive, and their opponents (us) as isolationist and "ultra nationalist". We definitely need to reclaim the language.
hey, i remember a couple of years ago (how times have changed) i used to call myself an anti capitalist/globalisation because i was against loads of stuff but didnt want to tie myself down to any ideology.
but now i am an anarchist because it allows for so many different threads and strands to develop within it. and it contains beliefs and ideals that i can identify with. and i like direct action.
