Schools Exempt from Bin Charges

category dublin | bin tax / household tax / water tax | news report author Monday November 03, 2003 15:22author by Jonah Report this post to the editors

Following a motion put to Dublin City Council by Sinn Féin, schools designated as disadvantaged by the Department of Education, will be exempted from any current or future waste collection.

It is my understanding that this was passed at the last City Council meeting. While I'm not sure why they didn't push for all schools, or for community groups and the like as well, it's still a cause for congrats. Considering the amount of waste created by schools, this could save them a few bob, which considering the increasing cost of insurance for one thing is well worth it.

Nice to win one every now and again on the Bin Tax, even if it isn't a major victory.

So this is all SF do agains the bin tax?

WHy wont SF TDs and Cllrs come out, join the blockades and be sent to prison like the rest of us.

Sinn Fein elected reps have taken part in blockades, Dessie Ellis and Cathal King for example. A Sinn Fein member went to prison, along with five Sinn Fein supporters. A Sinn Fein candidate is one of the people up in court today.

Now I'm not saying the Shinners did everything. In some areas they did nothing. And Mark Daly did call for people to pay the charge (But then no-one listens to Mark Daly within or without his party). The Socialist Party and activists in groups like WSM, ISN and WCA (Whom personally I think have been disgracefully written out of the story, despite having the most genuine commitment ie they're not planning on taking seats at the next election) clearly put more effort into the campaign, but the Shinners didn't exactly disgrace themselves. Best way to put it maybe is that they did the minimum necessary to be able to say they played a role in the campaign.

The motion referred to above though, is a good one, an actual real, positive, concrete accompishment. Not much of one, but we don't get enough of them on the Left that we should be reacting to them with sectarian abuse.

WSM, ISN and WCA have played a good role. It is the capitalist press that has written them out not the SP. At least the 'Voice' mentioned the affiliation of members of ISN unlike the Socialist Worker which simply labelled everyone as 'Socialist' in an attempt to get a a few impressionable youngsters to join them thinking they are the Party of Joe and CLare

The reason the sp got all the press was simply because the campaign began in Fingal, and Joe was a known person. Can't blame us for lazy journalists.

this is a question that really needs to be addressed!! the bin tax issue is dead and i like the way ye think ye won this time. the government is not going to listen to layabouts like you lot when ye don't even put forward any feasible solution to managing waste in this country!! the bin tax issue is the only way forward!! i don't vote FF but instead vote greens and any country in Europe will tell you when it comes to green issues such as waste it is up to the people to pay and expect a clean environment. how many of you 'rebel' anti-bin tax people would even bother your arse picking up a piece of litter of the ground and recycling!! and there are lots of ways the recycle!! my message is cop yourself on or you be living in a landfill in no time!!

You've really nailed this issue. Those creating rubbish must pay for it. If not recycle. FF are doing the right thing here, just bringing us into line with the rest of Europe.
