This has already been covered in the mainstream media, so I will be brief. More than fifty people took part in the hour-long picket. Copies of over 5,000 signitures were handed in to Mary Harney's office and also to Bertie Ahern's office. These signatures were collected during the 24-hour fast held outside the GPO by six of the workers from the North Inner City. The protest was also attended by Job Initiative workers from other affected areas.

I've heard from various people in my workplace that there used to be an organisation called the Scheme Workers Alliance (SWA) based in Dublin, which looked after JI and CE workers and they have had big demos against FAS cutbacks before. Are the SWA still in existence? And if so, could someone post up their address and phone number up on Indymedia. With Harney's continuning attacks on the FAS employment schemes we need somebody that we can turn to. Please don't delete this Indymedia as us FAS workers need to unite behind some organisation to resist Harney's cut's..
No, it is not. There was some trolling about this recently, and it is possible there will be more.
People need to organise in their own areas against the cuts, just like the people in Dublin are doing. Don't always go looking for someone else to fight your battles for you.
Do It Yourself.
You could get together and hold a fast and collect signatures, but YOU have to do it. The program they were working under was the Job INITIATIVE, in other words they had the initiative to go out and get these jobs after being long-term unemployed. They have now demonstrated that they are prepared to take the initiative to defend their jobs. It's up to you to take the initiative yourself, i.e. stand up on your hind legs and fight.
I think SIPTU have been involved in the JI issue in the Dublin 1 area, maybe you could contact them, but you should have been in a union before now, not waiting until FAS start giving out the P42 cards.
Sorry, that should be P45 - getting a bit giddy 'cause its friday
Yes, those were run by a chap called O'Meara. He was from Clondalkin. Sorry dont have a phone no for him, think he was the treasurer or charman . dont know if they are still going tho.
Basically I think they had there funding cut of by fas. Dont know any more, good luck
I believe they are gone. Regular contributor Paul Kinsella was on the governing committe of SWA, he might be able to help. Here is a link to his contact details. good luck
