category dublin | anti-capitalism | event notice author Friday October 10, 2003 17:18author by dunk - FUSPEYauthor email 02092997 at brookes dot ac dot uk Report this post to the editors

free and all are welcome

GLOBALISATION AND THE MEDIA, the award winning undercurrents documentary will be screened in DIT (dublin institute of technology) school of architecture next thursday @ 6.00 16th oct 2003. i am proposing this will be an INDYMEDIA IRELAND public screening. it will be free and all are welcome
glob
glob

it will be followed by a short 2 minute presentation of the FUSPEY network and a general discussion about how best to proceed.
the irish social forum commences the following day.

the doc is from "informed dissent", an undercurrents cd rom which also includes much other v relevant info about what is going on in the world today. world renowned philosopher noam chomsky offers much info on what the US is doing today.

hopefully there will be a few more nodes @ europe showing it on the same day and perhaps some virtual online discussion after?

"GLOBALISATION AND THE MEDIA, award winning documentary explores how the United States has spend the last fifty years constructing the present New World Order. Aided by its powerful military resources, alongside the IMF, World Bank and the World Trade Organisation, the rules of global trade have been largely imposed to serve its own interests. Globalisation and The Media explores the role of the media in this corporate led takeover of global resources."
is how film makers describe the documentary

thanks for the comments, putting the screening on as a feature and the image. i am having some difficulty getting all things organised- but it will still go ahead. i am trying to copy the cd rom film onto a vhs film- just in case the main stuff falls through. if anyone knows where i can do this please tell me. dit aungier st. has these facilities so i am calling up there to try it.

i hope there can be more of these screenings and i hope to start a few workshop type events soon

Dunk,

I think what Indymedia.ie needs a special space on this site to promo IMCers offline media making - events and so on - somewhere semi-perminently on the front page. Also, a special page for each workgroup, to further promo work such as your own.

But Dunk, do not assume conspiracy among the 'IMC elites' - this IMC is not well enough organised to be a conspiracy and has not got to the level that it can call itself a 'collective' (and I never understood that word anyway).

In time, it will, i think.

But this IMC has evolved in great ways over the last year or so and with Oscailt ( http://www.indymedia.ie/oscailt ) it is doing better than ever before.

What we need more than anything is a recruiting campaign and a campaign to teach various groups on how to make media for themselves and for the IMC. Bring people into the workgroups, which barely exist at this point, and get people collaborating together to make good media.

in time in time in time, all things will happen, but it needs criticism and active involvement, at the same time.

until then the IMC-IRL will remain a do it yourself operation, a loose network of DIYers. So yes, your video should be promo'd more so, I'd say.

end of rant.

anthony
true the story is still there
but i wonder how many people just read the newswire. and by this dont come accross it

i wonder are the imc team on for this event, which will go ahead regardless. i hope they will come down and share their ideas and hopes for imc with the students in dit and who ever else comes along.

i worked with the development of imc-oxford and having public indymedia events was a big thing. moving the venue around also helped.
inclussiveness and openess are the keys to these open systems. allowing for newcomers to get involved, add their input. too often a clique forms which is unhealthy.
there can be many layers or networks within networks

i hope people do know about this event on thr and indeed come down so we can REALly meet up. the virtual world is very goood, but using both together maximizes on all levels, and expands the system- it evovles

As far as I'm aware, the main impetus for designing and implementing the new Event Notices section was that the newswire was getting quite cluttered with articles which were just short announcements of an event without any real news as such. The fact that the events don't appear on the default newswire summary doesn't detract form their status as stories. They can still be commented upon and will turn up in the standard search. The latest comments facility will also show when someone has commented on an event.

it seems that calender events dont stay on the newswire, i think they should be on as newswire piece and also linked into calender event. it allows for the story and ideas about the event to grow. ie the idea of stereo imc screenings.
an experiment in how many imc nodes worldwide could watch the same film same time.
its could to push what we have, and develop what is not here yet.
why not?

things like this were proposed at the IMC meeting a few weeks back, but little public events seem to be happening.
indymedia is a great tool for change, i believe more people could/should use it. are they aware of it? is it easy for "outsiders" to get involved?

the tek improvements are great, well done vinnie and co
