LOGAN TOWNSHIP, N.J. - That letter to your congressman takes a curious detour these days, a 115-mile road trip to a sprawling industrial park in southern New Jersey.



In a ritual that has outlived the anthrax scare that prompted it, 9,000 pounds of mail addressed to congressional offices and federal departments — letters, petitions, invitations, junk mail, photographs, grant applications, newspaper clippings — arrive here each day to be exposed to enough radiation to neutralize any germs that might be lurking.

The process costs the government about $10 million a year and has altered how lawmakers keep in touch with the public. Many urge their constituents to e-mail, fax or call rather than send mail, which can arrive slightly burnt, melted or foul-smelling.

OSLO, Norway - A giant walrus has been delighting residents of the Norwegian capital during a rare visit as he lolls around on a sandy beach that is, for him, the sunny south.


Experts say the tusked walrus, possibly a young male, is more accustomed to the harsh, wintry climate of the Norwegian Arctic around the Svalbard archipelago, some 1,275 miles north of Oslo.

"It's very rare," University of Oslo marine biology professor Asbjoern Voellestad said of the visit. He knew of only one other such event in the last 15 or 20 years.

"He's definitely lost," he said, adding the mammal likely got separated from his herd and wandered off.

Gorilla flees zoo into Boston

BOSTON (Reuters) - A gorilla escaped from Boston's Franklin Park Zoo and injured at least one person before being subdued with tranquilliser darts, police and witnesses said.

A Boston police spokeswoman said a "juvenile" was taken to hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. It was not clear how the injuries were inflicted.

Local residents said police officers could be seen fleeing with guns drawn when the gorilla emerged from the zoo and roamed streets in Boston's Roxbury neighbourhood.

CIA pursues video game

The CIA is set to spend several million dollars to develop a video game aimed at helping its analysts think like terrorists, The Washington Times has learned.
The agency's Counter Terrorist Center, or CTC, is working with the Los Angeles-based Institute for Creative Technologies on a project designed to help its analysts, "think outside the box," a CIA spokesman said. The project is close to approval, but officials wouldn't comment on the exact cost of the program.
The institute, part of the University of Southern California, works with Hollywood movie and video game specialists.
Disclosure of the CIA video game project follows the Pentagon's recent cancellation of a plan for an online gambling parlor designed to predict a Middle East terrorist attack. The Pentagon's gambling scheme led to the resignation of retired Navy Vice Adm. John Poindexter, head of the Total Information Awareness data-mining counterterrorism program.
