IRISH GOVERNMENTS RESPONSE
to
Car Free Day,
Monday 22nd September, 2003.
Dublin City.
• 1 Garda Helicopter
• Garda Surveillance on GPO roof top
• A team of up to 10 undercover Garda with cameras
• 4 Horse Mounted Garda
• 4 Aggressive Garda Dogs
• Up to a dozen Garda Motorbikes
• Up to a half dozen Garda Mountain bikes
• More than half a dozen Garda Snatch Vans
• 2 - 4 X 4 Garda Patrols
• Audio-Visual Surveillance Van equipped with high-tec equipment
• Dozens of Garda CCTV cameras
• Senior Garda policing – Sergeants, Inspectors, etc.
• Up to 100 Uniformed Garda (all wearing their numbers!)
• All the other things they get up to

ALSO PRESENT:

• Body and personal property searches by undercover and uniformed Garda
• Confiscation of peoples bags, all the paint, markers, pens and chalk
• Personal details taken in lots of black books
• Intimidation, Oppressiveness, and Tension
• Complete and Calculated control of the event
All this for less than 200 intelligent, fun loving and good humoured folk who simply wanted to cycle and walk the sunny streets of Dublin on CAR FREE DAY.

Excellent report indeed. Respect to the Gardai but pity they are not out on the streets in force like that when innocent people are getting the shit kicked out of them - and their lives taken from them.

Around 200 protestors, not the biggest rts event, i'll bet the lovely gards thought they'd just be kind and help boost numbers. Sure the amount of traffic disruption caused by parked vans, loitering gards and horses really clogged up the streets. And they have such pretty bright jackets to keep the trapped motorists amused at their antics, and those cameras sure they were just trying to put together a documentary of their protest against cars to show the other lads at the station in the hope it will catch on, before you know it gards blocking traffic randomly will be a regular thing. Good to see them on board after their previous indiscretions, sure they subvert the state more than any of us could hope to.
