Who knows, if we have any paint left we could do a bit of redecorating on the outer walls of Mountjoy on the North Circular.
"CAR FREE" DAY 2003
Monday 22nd of September 2003 is European Car Free Day - part of
European Mobility Week.
Unfortunately this year the Dublin City Council is again virtually
ignoring the event. They are organising some events for the day
before but nothing for the day itself, not even one car-free street
in the capital city.
The Dublin Cycling Campaign are extremely disappointed at the failure
by the city council again to respond to the needs of the hundreds of
thousands of cyclists, pedestrians and public transport users to have
even a small sample of what the city could be like without motorised
vehicles.
In sorrow rather than anger the Dublin Cycling Campaign is organising
a wake for the Car-Free-Day concept. We are erecting a tombstone to
mourn its passing at a gathering on the steps of the CIVIC OFFICES on
September 22nd at one o'clock.
Everyone is invited to attend. Please wear a suitable mourning outfit
or at least a black armband. The press and TV will be invited to
attend so do make an effort and bring friends. As is usual at a wake
we hope to toast the memory of Car-Free-Day so bring something to
toast with (and lunch if you're short of time).
Later in the day we understand that critical mass cyclists will
gather at the SPIKE at five o'clock to re-paint the streets for Car-
Free Day.
Hope to see you and friends at one of the events.
Brendan Sheehan
how long is they're patience gonna hold?
coming soon.
I hope the painting sticks to the idea of road alterations and not blind paint throwing. It has to display the principles and not come across as pure vandalism.
lets hope other people get it
do you people even know what ye might be standing up for? does anyone have any ideas to make an ounce of difference in this fucked up world? or are ye just along for the party? nothin wrong with that either but there must be some people out there with some good ideas. where are ye all?
Well Mr Gavan, most people know why they are there but there is a range of different reasons, better public transport, less cars, more cycle lanes, promoting cycling, city space for people not cars, enviromental concern. All in all a disparate group, if the finer points of working out solutions was to occur there would be much disagreement. But thats not the point for most people, its a public way of registering your displeasure about whichever of these issues you feel strongly about. Sure there are more other ways of registering a complaint such as writing letters, for all they are worth. Reclaim the streets, turns these protests into something constructive in itself, a carnival athmosphere. Its a serious protest thats fun for the participants, we dont all have to protest with loudhailers sullen faces and monotonous chants. The problem is that some people in this country still associate fun with anarchy or some form of godless wickedness. So the idea gets misunderstood, it seems that many think protesters should be sad and downtrodden for their complaint to be valid. Although there is no official line on solutions, i'm sure everyone there will have their own ideas, and some of the people involved are well informed on the various issues, among the crowd you will find, town planners and architects as well as many other participants with their own views. Its a fairly openended affair and i am sure people have different ideas about it than me, so if they would promptly correct me then we can get a better picture.
It's no fun for the poor workers who have to clean up after you messers have all gone back to Foxrock.
The poor workers, i am sure its less of a clean up than is needed on friday, saturday and sunday morning after the excesses of our boozy society. If you didnt notice rts are actually pretty good at picking up any litter etc (though i doubt you have ever gotten off your arse and contributed to society)so lucky old workers wont have to bend over only use those green machines to scrub the surfaces, all in a days work. I will of course go home to blackrock as soon as i can buy a house there from my earnings as a slave-driver aboard daddies war galley. Tally ho, then well hang your scalp from our bridles as we run roughshod over you.... give over your moronic stereotypes, even if it were true would it really matter unless you were intent at causing division in society at all costs. poor mishappen bitter husk and i fell for its goading, for shame. Good job on rts though, nice to see the sun likes us at least.
any pix from the DCC of the wake @ civic offices. i was there, expected more, only @ 10 people, could have been publicised more
does anyone have info of what was done in the other cities @ europe. how many roads were officiallly blocked off, how long was pub transport free?
is there a feature being done by any IMC heads?
