(Republican) Sinn Féin march through Dublin. Bold Robert Emmet lives on in the hearts of true Republicans. Na Fianna today marched through Dublin, leading the parade organised by Republican Sinn Féin. The parade assembled at the Garden of Remembrance in central Dublin, and marched to the spot that Emmet was hung by the British, 200 years ago, at St Catherines church, Thomas Street. |

Truly pathetic, when working people are under attack across the city with the non collection of bins by the councils and the jailings of Joe Higgins and Clare Daly not to mention the whole agenda of cutbacks launched by the government, what are RSF and their ilk up to? They are parading around in silly constumes pretending to be soldiers and commemerating some guy from the ruling class that died 200 years ago. Catch youselves on, the struggle is taking place NOW not in the past.
Robert Emmet may have come from a ruling class background, but he was very much a man of the people and died as a man of the people. He died that his country may be free, and it is our duty to remember people like him.
On the issue of the bin charges, RSF members have being involved in their local communities and have not seeked recognition as a movement or a party for it. You look at the many parties and selective organisations with their parties logos and you do think, who here is using this to promote themselves?
At the recent protest in Ballyfermot, we seen Provisional banners advertising their Cumann etc. I think this is a disgrace, this is not about their Cumann. That banner had nothing to do with the bin charges. We could have gone along and brought big banners etc with our logo, but its not about that. We go there for the people, not to promote ourselves. So you asked the question, what are we doing? We are doing what we can, and we unlike the rest, like the Socialist Party, dont bring our banners and advertise our logos, because this isn't about organisations, its about doing something for the people of Dublin.
But don't be so ignorant to slam us for remembering people who have made a great sacrifice for the people of Ireland. Because it just highlights your ignorance.
Interesting to note the anti bin charges folks protesting at the commeration that bertie was at, i know he needs constant reminding that there are people in the country but the event was not put on for him alone, there are other places for protest and in this case it caused some antoganism. Unless everyone there was an enemy by default, you should be trying to gain supporters not rub people the wrong way. In a way all im saying is pick your battles, and try not to make it so easy to be painted as the villain of the piece. Even if the confrontation was limited to the times bertie entered and left his car, if he was blocaded or inconvenienced, that would have been better if he was the intended target. As it was it was a bit like firing a blunderbus to make your point and not caring about the collateral damage (god when did those horrible words enter my vocabulary).
I see Na Fianna are employing child soldiers...
Bertie wasnt 'heckled' at the Emmet commemoration because he didnt speak. As another comment pointed out, his presence was almost incidental but the trots decided to make a show of themselves and in their ignorance managed to piss off a lot of people involved in organising the event from much more solid working class/socialist/republican backgrounds than themselves. In fact the whole camapaign is turning into a shambles and all to bolster the mock-martyrdom of the SP.
So, do you think Emmet would have been on the side of the pro tin taxers? Nope, I think he would have been with the people of no property in opposition.
The size of last nights march to Mountjoy gives the lie to your ramblings.
