Consider this Seanin: Our birthrate is now less than what is needed to maintain a static society. The numbers entering third level education are falling, and in a few years this will lead to a declining workforce. A declining workforce means a declining tax base, which means corresponding pressure on social welfare, health and so fourth. Immigration is part of the solution to this.

And in case you think this is some lefty propoganda, John Bruton said the same thing in a recent article in the Irish Times. So restricting immigration just leads to less workers and an even bigger cutback in our social services.

If anything ever happened in ireland that meant we could no longer stay here then we would seek refuge somewhere else. If selafield blew up and Ireland became uninhabitable where would we go? who would we expect to take us in? treat our illness, find us homes?

Does this person not have the slightest notion of history ? Ireland, unlike Belgium Britain France, Germany etc. never colonized Africa. We thus have no historical obligation to accept Africans. In this we differ from say Belgium, which could be argued to owe something to people from the Congo. Ireland was the colony, not the colonizer. Is it possible that this person does not know that ? Please, buy yourself a basic history of Ireland text.

This person closes by asking where we Irish would go if Sellafield blew up. I can think of a number of countries that might offer us refuge, but only a fool would number Nigeria among them. In fact African countries are notorious for not offering refuge to victims of disasters (and genocide!).

Does not mean that we ourselves did the raping and the pillaginf, but that we are now a part of that club and as such we are reaping the benefits of those centuries of exploitation.
And we are fully compliant in their institutions such as the IMF, WTO, WEF, UN etc that continue to strip what were once wealthy civilisations of whatever natural resources they have left.

If selafield did blow up and contaminate Ireland beyond habitation where would we go? Do you honestly think that America would open up its doors to 4 million Irish people and 50 million Britains? (not to mention the scandanavians and northern europeans who would all leave for their own healths sake and the health of their families.

We would no longer be rich because the property values and business that we have built up would instantly become worthless. Would we have a right to leave our countries and try to find refuge somewhere else? without jobs or money we would be forced to steal to survive, the trauma of such a situation would certainly turn many people to drugs, people would be sick, there would be deformed children.
Would the neo nazis still stay in Eire to preserve our glorious culture at whatever cost? or would they suddenly find it acceptable to dilute another culture, to become everything they hate in others.
This is not a totally outragous proposition, it is possible that at any moment a disaster could occur that would destroy our homes.

I've never heard people deny the fact that the famine actually happened, which is what Holocaust deniers do - it's not that they blame the holocaust on the jews, but rather that they claim it's a myth, full stop.

People arguing over the famine's causes and so fourth does not equal "famine denial" because nobody is denying the central fact that the famine actually occurred. So, there is no such thing as a famine denier. There may be assholes who blame the famine on the ignorant irish, but that does not equate to "famine denial"

As a history graduate I can't let this one pass. Revisionism is something that is part and parcel of historical research, but there is an ENORMOUS difference between "revisionism" and holocaust denial.

Revisionism, whether it be in Irish or any other type of history, deals with different arguments about why or how historical events took place. For example, a (very) crude example of a revisionist is Kevin Myers, who generally blames all of the Irish troubles on the republican movement. However, revisionists, whether genuine academics or assholes like Kevin Myers, agree on one basic thing - that the historical events in question took place. I mean, they ignore the fact that I told them I teach English to immigrants, only to call me a Nazi! I'm trying to help people, for goodness' sake! I work with immigrant communities in America, so I have a pretty good idea of the dificulties they face -- most of which are caused by the unchecked immigration that allows criminals and free-loaders to sneak in alongside the honest people who come here to contribute to society.

Ireland has had immigration from Scandanavia, Normandy, mainland Europe, Britain and at each time these groupings were looked on as "different". Anyone with "Fitz" in their name is of Norman descent, but we don't go around calling them "Norman-Irish". No doubt at that point in our history there was someone worrying that we might "interbreed to oblivion" but it obviously hasn't happened.

The same is going to be true today. Recent immigrants will soon settle into mainstream Irish society and things will carry on as normal.

That's what you think. I don't go around calling myself "European-American," either. But there's a certain segment of our population here in the states that insists on distinguishing itself with such a hyphenation. It causes strife and division. Firstly, your comparisons are misguided. Europeans did not attempt to integrate into a Native American society and culture - they simply took over the land, and banished or exterminated the previous owners. They were then the owners of the new state, so there wasn't much of a need to distinguish themselves by hypenating their identity. Contrast that with groups such as African-Americans who from the outset were outsiders and to a very large part still are today (blacks in the states are more likely to live in poverty and suffer racism, for example). The hyphenation thus becomes a symptom rather than a cause of "strife and division". Or are the blacks to blame for slavery and Jim Crow laws too?

As for a certain segment distinguishing itself, which one? The Irish-Americans, Italian-Americans, African-Americans, Arab-Americans or one of the many others?

Integration will depend largely on tackling such issues as poverty and injustice. In that, Ireland is not exactly a shining light, although there's plenty of hope and at least our welfare state is somewhat more developed than the states, so I'm slightly optomistic we'll do a better job than you guys.

Throughout his posts he's engaging in political racism, distorting facts, using unsupported anecdotal evidence, and then bizarrely using uncited bogus statistics, while simultaneously rejecting the use of statistics.

For the record, ALL academic studies (bar the ones conducted by Eugenicist and other racist nutters, and I haven't come across any statistics from these people yet in the four years I have been researching racism and other forms of hate crime), into hate crime in the US show that the greatest number of hate crimes are ones committed by whites on blacks. For example, Nolan, Akayama and Berhanu, (2002, "The Hate Crime Statistics Act", American Behavioural Scientist, Vol 46, No 1, SAGE) show, using centralised federal crime data for the whole of the US, that, between 1992 and 1999, 68% of racist hate crime perpetrators were white, while 16% were black, while 69% of racist hate crime victims were black and 18% were white. (People from groups that fall outside of the categories of black and white making upo the remainder in each case)

There is no data on sexual assault that is broken down by the race of the perpetrator, that I know of. If there is such data on sexual assaults it seems highly implausible that it would show more black-on-white than white-on-black attacks, given the power relations in American society,and its history of black women being raped by their slavemasters or gangs of white racists.

Insider. I would love to engage in a discussion with you about race-blindness vs what I will call proactive anti-racism (as distinct from clumsy affirmative action). Given America's institutional racism, the legacy of slavery and so-on I am afraid a symmetrical "race blind" justice would do nothing to restore the inequalities produced by the ongoing access racism. The bit about race being a biological fact is bizarre and shows a complete ignorance of genetics. If whiteness (I'll dispense with the capital W, there's nothing sacred about it, but more of that later) is so superior to other races, and a product of evolution, then why is it recessive? Shouldn't we let his precious evolution take its course and let it be outbred? Of course there are no races, they are political constructs, going back to imperialism. Skin colour is as arbitrary as eye colour, hair colour, blood type etc. So it doesn't matter who breeds with who. We're all crossbred.

Anyway the bogus stats. Most of them from the 80s, stats about muggings (and therefore explained in terms of poverty and alienation), not hate crime, not from the FBI crime data as he claimed, but second hand from Jared Taylor of the Ultraconservative New Century Foundation and as advertised on the Nazi stormfront website. BTW my FBI data is based on cases of hate crime REPORTED, under the Hate Crime Act Data Collection Act 1990, the first of its kind, not prosecuted as he claimed, and all the research on under reporting shows that(police forces being the way they are) ethnic minorities underreport hate crimes at much higher rates than whites.
