[English subtitles on screen] 9:20pm Fíorscéal - Troubled Waters: In 1979 Australia expanded its territorial borders by 200 nautical miles to take advantage of the rich oil and gas deposits in the Timor Sea. For centuries before, fishermen from the island of Roti in Indonesia have been fishing for their livelihood in these same waters. Now they are regularly arrested for trespassing a border they cannot see, and are sent to jail for increasingly longer periods with no recourse to legal representation. They return home to debts many cannot forsee escaping in their own lifetime. Troubled Waters investigates the human and financial costs of Australia's current border protection policies and how traditional fishermen are turning to the people smuggling trade in order to survive. |

Jump To Comment: 1 2Australia is increasingly under Howard becoming an American outpost. All the murderous endeavours of Indonesia are being ignored. The Aussies have always been frightened of the Yellow Peril. They worry about Indonesia and it's population that breeds like bloody rabbits. They allowed Indonesia to invade East Timor and slaughter half the population.
Australia is basically a cowardly nation that will do nothing about the atrocities that are committed by the Asian nations to it's north because they are afraid that these barbaric countries may just decide to move south.
The backward south east Asian nations mostly ruled by military juntas look at the vast empty spaces of Australia and wonder why their overcrowded countries could not settle there and make the deserts bloom. To counter this threat the Aussies give aid and comfort to the various dictators who keep the masses under control.
What are they up to in the Soloman Islands? Why have Aussie troops invaded the Soloman Islands?
Just a little aside,.... I worked for a while on an Australian Army camp and a more moronic bunch of dickheads I have never ever come across!
As a rule Aussies are a decent bunch, not too bright but friendly enough. Go to their military camps though and you will not believe the level of ignorance that is to be found there! Amongst officers and men.
could this not be considered british imperialism?
no?
didn't think so.
