category national | arts and media | news report author Thursday August 21, 2003 14:24author by John Reilly - NEARfmauthor email nearfm at iol dot ie Report this post to the editors

Tune into ‘Majority World’ on NEAR (North East Access Radio) 101.6fm, today and every Thursday 4:30 – 5:30pm. Repeat Friday mornings 9 – 10am. NEARfm is a community radio station serving North East Dublin from the city centre to the airport and Ballymun to Fairview.

On today’s programmme Tom Hyland of the East Timor Ireland Solidarity Campaign on the co-ordinator of the human rights and justice group AFRI, Mr Joe Murray becoming the first recipient of the new Archbishop Desmond Tutu international award aimed at honouring “unsung heroes” in the non-governmental organisation sector. I’ll be interviewing Len Aldis from the Campaign Against Arms Trade on shutting down DESi (Defence Systems and Equipment International) Europe’s largest arms fair, which is to be held at London Docklands 9 – 12 September. There’ll be music from The Steps and Woody Guthrie, Agent Apple will dispatch tales of The Biotic Baking Brigade And The Global Pastry Uprising. Finally human rights activist and Voices In The Wilderness campaigner Caoimhe Butterly reports from an increasingly violent and unpredictable Baghdad.

Any comments, ideas, criticisms or any other thoughts on the content, format, style or any other aspect of the programme can be directed by email to [email protected], just remember to put the name of the show Majority World, in the subject line. This is your community media channel your feedback helps define this project.

I'd love to hear it too - in Rome!

Maybe someone could help nearFM set up a streaming server, or just record the program and make an MP3 of it.

Ideas?

http://www.radiowaves.fm/index5.shtml

Handy site that should be used extensively for media purposes.

On the front page click on "Stations" on the left hand side of the page.

Then click on "Browse by County" on the left hand side of the next page.

Then click on "Expand All" to see a full listing of a few hundred stations diveded up per county.

Anyone know a similar site for all local written media??

There are many community radio stations around the country who are open to alternative/ radical/ left/ green/ etc contributions. Most stations have a requirement to produce a certain level of 'talk radio' rather than wall to wall music like most of the commercial stations so if anyone out there has an idea for either a one-off programme or a series you should get in touch with your local community station. You'll probarbly find they welcome you with open arms. ICRFM is based in Carndonagh on the Inishowen Peninsula and if you are in this area give us a call. We're here to give a voice to people and ideas the commercial and state sectors are happy to ignore. We don't go in for inquisitorial type interviews, rather we give our contributors the time and space they need to develop their ideas and explain where they're coming from. If you want to get your message on air, get on to us.
Your local community station is listed on radiowaves.fm

We had our Italian on the inside of Near Fm,but he went home.(and his goodbye's censored from indymedia).
The main aim when the radio group was set up to link Ireland up to an Italian satellite radio project for the WEF.Since thats been cancelled there has been no focus.
So financially/infrastructure wise,we would be a long way from helping NearFm stream.

Any work going in NearFM Bella?

Maybe NEAR FM could pick up a copy of the Indymedia CD "audioflare" which is available in the shops, and see if its broadcastable quality?

The guy who did it just used a cassette recorder, I havent heard it yet but reportedly it sounds fine.

Maybe you could link up with the IMC Radio/Audio group too.
