Spotted around Dublin this week... Stop signs with stickers put on them, so they read 'Stop Driving'. Text underneath says: Start: Walking. Cycling. Using Public Transport. |

Maybe when the Govt gets around to slapping a pedestrian or walking tax on you.Dont disbelive this this is another wonderful edict from our socialist, leaders in Europe.
All we get is more money being wasted on building new roads for cars.
I also get an abortion every couple of months when I'm over there.
I go to england once a week and use my provisional license to claim dole, housing allowance child benefit and an extra twenty pounds fifty pence for being blind.
I feel quite smug.
until we take serious steps to reclaim our language. Anglocentric in thought and speech.
About the trams in Barcelona run by anarchists. Well, it's not exactly a triumph if tram drivers continue doing a job they've done all their lives for another 18 months. The experiment was too short and only focussed on one small city. Since there was a war on at the time, people behaved differently than they would in peacetime. War motivates civilians to doggedly carry on with normality - their survival instinct kicks in. In times of war people are prepared to endure hrdships which they wouldn't normally put up with. Also, it's hardly anarchy if several towns in the area had anarchist mayors. Regardless, these people worked very hard for those 18 months.
My main concern about anarchy is personal safety, law and order. Not forgetting medical research, the vast amounts needed to find a cure for AIDS could hardly be raised by a few collectives subsisting and bartering. I don't see why we should give up all the gains we have amde to go back to the middle ages.
That is the BEST PC/beurcratic description of my handle. :}
I am only speaking as a humble user of whatever rail services british rail offerd. Privatised, lefted righted ,or Blaired. Yes Southhall did happen but is that a total proof that privatisation is bad?As for who got the loot ask Tony.
Onto Bio fuels. [1] There is plenty of information and already available technology to make bio diesel in your own kitchen.
The evil US and Germany have been producing conversion kits for cars for the last ten years.
The US does not TAX either fuel if it is used off road in Agricultural machinery, etc. Germany it is 40% cheaper than Dino diesel. But you proably know this already.Even Klintoon, much as I despise that man,had the sense to bring out an executive order that by 2010,80% of the US military vechicles would be able to run on bio or have multi fuel capability. The German army has had thatfor years.
[2] No high level science or mental masturbation required to produce the stuff. If you know how to fry chips, strain the oil,and add a chemical. You are qualified to make it.
[3] we have been making alcohol for drinking for ages. They are called stills. Any booze distillery can turn out motor alcohol.
Well,I certainly have to agree with you about the idiots in control politically and commerically of this Rock.I have first hand dealings with them on a daily basis in busisness.Suppose it goes back to What the peasent doesnt know.He wont eat. Or "Ah shurre Dat will nevir work" Irish ethic.
However if some bright spark wanted to compete and make money for their cause, this would be a good way of doing it. anarcho diesel anyone? @25cents a litre? Get in line! But I think we would rather all sit here and pontificate about the evils of the USA ,cars, multi nationals, etc.
And you are right about us apeing the Brits. We should run up the Union Jack again here.Forget about all this Irish freedom nonsense. We are West Brits in thought and deed.
Gunman old chap, so privatisation improved British rail ? Ahem ......
How about a quick reality check ?
Never heard of Southall ?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/453337.stm
And I seem to recall that Railtrack was put "into administration" by the British Government.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/politics/2600883.stm
In case the terminology confuses you that means it was effectively "de-privatised" or "re-nationalised" if you prefer.
And this wasn't done by hairy leftists of any hue whether Anarchist, Marxist or even a strange hybrid of Anarcho-Marxists ..... no it was done by nice squeaky clean middle-class pro-business New Labour under Tony Blair .....
Just for information the whole privatisation/de-privatisation circus is estimated to have cost the British taxpayer ca. GBP 20 bn.
(Would be interesting to know who got the loot.)
Concerning your suggestions on bio-diesel etc., yes of course eminently sensible on paper.
However, you have to accept the political and social realities of Ireland. The will to develop and promote such technologies does not exist due to a combination of factors ... where should I begin ... let's see .....
- Influence of the oil industry (and of course the bad old gaz-guzzling USA)
- Lack of any vision / imagination (can't blame the US for that I suppose ..... :-))
- Lack of will to channel financial resources into development (related to the above)
- Lack of technically skilled personnel to develop the industry (lack of engineering tradition due to historical reasons and emigration brain drain in the 70's and 80's)
etc. etc. I could go on and on.
What usually happens in these cases is that "the Irish" (government, "business community", etc.) sit on their arses humming and hawing. The technology is developed elsewhere and then eventually imported bringing profits to the foreign corporations and a few of their local squireen lackeyswho control the distribution. To understand my point here, you only have to follow the history of "wind power" in Ireland and compare it with another small country which has some autonomous political will, i.e. Denmark.
Sorry to diappoint you but you can forget "the Irish" (in the sense of the business/political establishment) of ever taking the initiative in producing or developing anything sensible ... they are as Napoleon said of the British "a nation of shopkeepers" - by this I mean that they are good at acting as distribution agents for goods and technology produced and developed elsewhere but not at actually developing anything themselves - i.e. they are primarily "merchant capitalists" (buy and sell) not "production capitalists" (make and sell) ....
"Innovation" is a word that frightens them ....
Might be why I no longer live there .....
Well, enjoy your little car rides around the rock ... the winds from the Atlantic help to disperse the fumes ....
Anarchists or Communists?Or a bit of both?
first time I have ever heard of Anarchists using Marxist phraseology.Thought you were against ALL forms of Govt.Or is it a touch of Leftism favourism?
As for travelling on British rail before or after privatisation.Well before, they were grubby, appx 15/20 mins late.Narky, and not very customer friendly.
Now they are appx five mins late, cleaner, and a bit more customer friendly.
Compared to Irish rail.Any train that runs on time here is a miracle.I talked once to a Russian emigriant here, once about his comparisons to growing up in Soviet Russia. He said Irish rail, was WORSE than the railway system in Stalinist Russia, which was just as unionised and inefficent as Irish rail.Howevevr the trains ran on time.Proably due to the fact that a Checka officer was making sure that they did and the driver knew that there was a distinct possibility of a one way ticket to a Gulag for "sabotaging the peoples work day and transport" if he was late.
sounds good if it gets Irish rail moving a bit quicker.
Yeah, a good public transport system is well overdue here. But are we willing to pay for it from our taxes?Or will this be built by Anarchists? Untill you get some sort of viable, punctual, efficent, friendly, public transport system.By whatever form of Govt. The good old evil car is the only option on this little Rock.
Please don't suggest more car and fuel taxes are the solution.
The more you tax me for using my car.The more I will use it.Want to get my value for money.
Want to be
REALLY pouplar?Suggest and campain for the use of Bio diesel, and alcohol as fuels. Both are eco friendly,[Green, and gives you a stick to whack the Govt with on the eco front] can be produced here in Ireland[Jobs].Would break the hold of evil multi national fuel companies, etc.
Or is it really just a case of Ludditism. That NO one should own a car and we should all go back to
Asses and carts?
He is obvisouly a sad nineteen year old who is more educated than his intelligence allows for,and is obvisouly fustrated that the Real world doesnt fit in his view of how it should be,as espoused by the "radical" liberal views as espoused by his teenage chums. Advice go and get drunk and get laid[if any girl/boy will let you]
Well Seainin old fruit, the "free market" system doesn't seem to make such a good job of it ....
Ever travelled on British Rail after privatisation ?
And in fact if you'd care to study some history instead of wallowing in your own preconceived notions you might find out that the last time "anarchists" had a go at organising a public transport system in Barcelona during the Spanish civil war, they didn't do too badly .....
(But I forgot that for you "history" stops at 1798.)
"The achievements of collectivisation in Barcelona
were many. Take for example the tramways. Out of the 7,000 workers 6,500 were members of the CNT. Because of the street battles all transport had been brought to a halt. The transport syndicate as unions of the CNT were known) appointed a commission of seven to occupy the administrative offices while others inspected the tracks and drew up a plan of repair work that needed to be done. Five days after the fighting stopped 700 tramcars, instead of the usual 600, all painted in the black and red colours of the CNT, were operating on the streets of Barcelona.
With the profit motive gone, (the trams had belonged to a Belgian company before the workers
took over), safety became more important and the number of accidents was reduced. Fares were lowered and services improved. In 1936, 183,543,516 passengers were carried. In 1937 this had gone up by 50 million. The trams were running so efficiently that the workers were able to give money to other sections of urban transport. Wages were equalised for all workers and increased over the previous rates. For the first time free medical care was provided for the workforce.
As well as giving a more efficient service the workers found time to produce rockets and howitzers for the war effort. They worked overtime and Sundays to do their share for the anti-fascist struggle. To further underline the fact that getting rid of the bosses and rulers would not lead to a breakdown of order it can be pointed out that in the three years of collectivisation there were only six cases of workers stealing from the workshops."

Well, well. Won't somebody have to work to keep the trains going? Who will pay them? Will the community have a whip round? - waht happens if the community are diassatisfied with the service and won't pay? Who's going to sort it out?
What else can anarchy do for me? Who will protect me when a schizophrenic is told by the voices in his head to kill me? Who will stop someone smashing my skull open for a fiver in my pocket?
Who will protect me from my fellow man?
... he's a sad cretin who's interests in life seem to be restricted to trying to annoy leftists and blowing the hell outa wildlife with his big gun...
that's the free market in operation, that's individualism, that's capitalist consumption, that's deregulation. Under anarchy there would be no "D4 audreys", 4WD would only be used by people in the outback that needed them and old folk wouldn't have to drive because there would be a decent public transport system. What you see in operation now is the succesful capitalist system at work. Breathe deeply and enjoy the fumes.... but don't linger too long because you've got work to do!
On our roads.like idiot pedestrians who walk across junctions ignoring red lites,[in the hope of compo claims no doubt.] Like fuckwitted cyclists biking against the traffic flow.Like dumb women motorists in ford fiestas with L plates and their no doubt sixth provo liscense, driving at nite with no lites on.Like even dumber Dub 4 little "Audries" driving HUGE 4WDs,down to the shops. And are incapable of handling the damn things because their husband bought them these things as a social point scorer.
Not to mention the geriatics of the road, who bought their liscenses in 1902 for the then new fangled horseless carrige, which could go no faster than 25mph,for otherwise the human body would be crushed. They insist in driving that speed today still.Add that this is all overseen by a zelous anti car traffic controller in Dublin and a police force that is stopping people speeding on perfectly straight roads with no traffic within two miles.Yet ignore pulling boy racers who hammer thru residential areas.
Isnt this chaotic and Anarchostic enough???
Come find me Mr.Angry.
You can never take my roadsign away.
Took me hours to cut it down with the cheapo consaw I knicked from your shed.Sorry about the scratches on your new born child, but I was aiming for your car, besides you can't park for shit.
Anyways, come find me,I still have have the pole from the roadsign. Its nice and long and jagged.
It might just fit your colon.
Once again: G'wan the chaos
surely now, some of the drivers who until now (one can only assume by their behaviour) assumed that the stop signs, being planted in the pavement were intended for pedestrians. Now it is much clearer that it is the motor vehicles which are required to stop.
which is surely similar to 'stop' I appriciate that it may still be illegal but to be honest i would have concerns for the intelligence of anyone who doesn't understand that 'stop' and 'stop driving' are basically equivalent
And I reserve my right, as a motorist and concerned citizen, to stuck my foot up your arse when I see you!
Me wanna know so I can nick one and cos chaos which it turn will piss of all sorts of IMC arseholes
G'wan the chaos!
apart from being illegal. Just shows you the state of mind of these sort of people.
with go ahead arrows. little bit of sticky paper and you have a rocket with a no sign.
The addition to the sign might draw motorists attention to what it says in the first place. "Jeysus a stop sign, sure I never saw one of those before"
Like Lone Gunman says this is illegal and against the law. Fucking shit-stirers trying to cause trouble. I hope you're happy when you see an accident caused by your illegal defacing of the road traffic signs. Probably another evil trotskyite plot to cause mayhem on the streets of Dublin.
Under the road traffic act .any defacing ,altering ,or tampering with road traffic signs.
Stop (octagonal) and Yield (inverted triangle) Signs are different shapes from all other road signs so that they can be recognised even if defaced. Those Stop sign stickers are available from carbusters.org
.. unless doddy is giving me a lift loike
Excellent idea but approach with caution I reckon - gotta be careful not to interfere / take away from what the warning sign is saying - lettering needs to be kept small.
so that more people could make up the stickers for themselves. Nice one!
I hope this is a sustained campaign.
