(1) Dublin Green Map Gets a Boost
..............................................................
Thanks to a small start-up grant from the Local Environmental Partnership Award,
the Dublin Green Map is once again moving forward. We have been funded to map
the location of the city's recycling("bring")centres, which are listed but not
mapped in such a way that makes them easy to locate. We would like to augment
this effort by listing as well those facilities related to recycling around the
city, such as computer recycling, architectural salvage yards, recycling of
building materials, community composting schemes, public art installations using
recycled objects and materials, etc. In order for them to be mapped, they must
have a fixed location, and be identifiable by the nearest two cross-streets.

If you have ideas for recycling related projects which should be on the Dublin
Green Map, please send us an email, or drop into Cultivate Centre and let us
know. mailto:[email protected]

For more on the international Green Map system and its concepts, as well as
examples of map projects worldwide, go to

(2) Serious about sustainable living?
..............................................................
Do you dream of living in an ecological community? The Village has begun a
membership drive for 40 new households.

This exciting new housing initiative has moved to a new phase. Sustainable
Projects Ireland Ltd, who run the Village project, have secured on option to
purchase 67 acres of land beside the village of Cloughjordan in North Tipperary.
The project is development with a difference. It's about people planning and
creating community for themselves, building affordable ecological homes and
generating local enterprise.

In 1999 the first Village members came together to begin the process of
designing their "home" and establishing means of communicating and dealing with
one another. Four years later, with the price of houses still rising and traffic
congestion worsening, the membership has grown, as has the members'
determination to make their vision a reality.

The Village isn't interested in creating suburbia where residents leave at the
crack of dawn to commute to work, only returning late in the evening. Rather
it's committed to generating local enterprise so that long-distance commuting is
minimised and quality of life is prioritised. Community-owned facilities are
therefore an essential part of the Village's design. They will include community
buildings, district heating and a broadband internet network.

Community gardens, an orchard and a wildlife area are also included in the
project's plans, ensuring that local food and recreation are integral to the
community. Another key feature of the Village is its commitment to building a
local renewable energy system, and environmental waste treatment systems.

Village members are confident that their innovative and creative plans will in
time create a unique environment with numerous tourism and educational
possibilities. From a general awareness of increasing environmental damage and
worsening quality of life, the Village is a positive development for the future.
It's about building a better way of living.

To be part of this innovative and exciting project and to become a dweller in
the first truly sustainable village in Ireland people are asked to apply to
Sustainable Projects Ireland Ltd. If you are interested in finding out more
contact Michael Newham at mailto:[email protected] Or take a look at the

(7) Centre for Environmental Living & Training
..............................................................
The County Clare based CELT, the Centre for Environmental Living & Training, is
a registered charity dedicated to environmental awareness, education and
training. They are the group that hold the ‘Weekend in the Woods’ events. The
first was held at Bealkelly Wood on Nov 30th / Dec 1st 2002 and featured 11
different courses and attended by over 80 trainees from far and wide. There was
a great ‘buzz’ as people got into learning skills from expert tutors. In the
spring of this year the second 'Weekend in the Woods' took place in Bealkelly
Wood. Again there were over 80 participants with new faces and a couple of new
courses – Longbow-making and Coracle-building – adding interest. Many people
expressed delight at simply being in such a beautiful setting – rich oak
woodland carpeted by bluebells, orchids, etc, beside the peaceful shore of Lough
Derg on the Shannon.

CELT also took part in Earth-Day in association with Scariff Community College
which featured talks by Duncan Stewart and Dr. Peter Taylor as well as a host of
other interesting talks, crafts stalls, displays and demonstrations and a
woodland walk. In July four students were sent by CELT to represent Ireland at
the European Youth Conference on the Environment to be held in the English Lake
District.

(8) EU Food Supplements Directives
..............................................................
There are three EU Directives under consideration that will severely restrict
your freedom to take responsibility for your personal health. The sales of
vitamins, mineral supplements and traditional herbal medicines will be
restricted. If you feel that these directives will restrict your personal
freedom then please notify your concern to your MEP and ask them to vote against
these directives when they are debated in the EU parliament in the autumn. Also
express your concern to your TD, MP or Assembly Member.

There are three Directives that will be coming along in the next couple of
years:
1. The Foods Supplements Directive
2. The Traditional Medicinal Products Directive
3. Amendments to the Medicines Directive

The Foods Supplements Directive

Key Points are:

Only vitamins and minerals are considered at this stage. Other food supplements
such as fish oils will be considered at a later stage

Maximum dosage levels will be set for each vitamin and mineral and the final
levels are likely to be very low. This is because many EU states think that
vitamins and minerals should be classed as medicines.

A ‘positive list’ is a list of nutrients and their forms which are permitted to
be used in a food supplement. There are around 300 ingredients that have not
been included in this list, including boron and selenium yeast. There is
provision for manufacturers to submit nutrients for approval, but it will be a
very costly procedure, leading to significant price increases for the consumer.

The Traditional Medicinal Products Directive

It only applies to herbal products at this stage

It will regulate herbal medicines as though they were pharmaceutical drugs. Full
pharmaceutical standards of manufacture will be imposed, which is extremely
costly and likely to force smaller producers out of business.

Their efficacy will be measured on the basis of long-standing traditional use.
This is defined as having been on the market for 30 years, 15 of which must be
within the EU. Many herbs have been in use for hundreds of years but
combinations of herbs with vitamins and or minerals may be unable to get a
license because the mixture is unlikely to have been on the market for 30 years.
Most importantly, the Directive will not provide for any new products and
innovation will be stifled.

Amendments to the Medicines Directive

The EU is now considering updating the Medicines Directive so as to take account
of new therapies and procedures. The amendment will widen the scope of the
present definition of a medicine in such a way that any substance having a
physiological effect may be considered as a medicine, thereby making it possible
to reclassify any health product, food supplement or food as a medicine.

While appropriate regulation is to be welcomed, we do not need draconian EU laws
which will remove many perfectly safe health products from the market for no
good reason.

The excellent safety record of natural healthcare products is well known. Not a
single case of hospitalisation resulting from vitamin toxicity has been recorded
in Ireland. However, between 12-15% of all hospital admissions are due to the
side effects of prescribed medication.

The Implications of the EU Directives are:

The only vitamin and mineral products available will be low strength and
ineffective

The range and choice of herbal remedies will be limited

Combination products will not be available

The cost of complying with the regulations will force products off the market,
not because they are safe, but because manufacturers will not be able to meet
the very high compliance costs. Manufacturers in this industry are largely small
to medium sized enterprises, many of which will not survive. Similar regulations
have already resulted in the closure of many small businesses producing
traditional and craft foods across Europe.

Self-help measures are being removed. With the health service under pressure, it
is more important than ever to stay healthy and to keep away from overcrowded
and infectious hospitals. Now legitimate methods of maintaining one’s own
health, a fundamental human right, are being taken away by these directives. For
example, high strength vitamin C will no longer be available, and neither will
supplements for common ailments such as osteo-arthritis, for which conventional
medicine has no remedy. Healthcare is being reduced to the administration of
medicine.

(9) Campaigns - Smoking In Pubs
..............................................................
The Irish Minister for Health wants to ban smoking in pubs and restaurants,
Green Ireland want you to support him.
Opinion polls in Ireland, among both smokers and non-smokers, show that there is
almost 90% public support, for stricter regulation of smoking in public places.

In a press release issued on 30 January 2003, Mr. Micheál Martin TD, Minister
for Health, has proposed a prohibition on smoking tobacco products in places of
work. Following a consultation period, he intends to introduce the necessary
regulations on January 1st 2004.

During this consultation period the Minister will listen to arguments for and
against the proposed prohibition.

If you agree with his initiative, then it is important that you add your name to
this letter so that the Minister is made aware of your support. Sign the

Directors

ECO-UNESCO is an expanding not-for-profit organisation providing practical
environmental education services to both public and private sector clients. A
key element in the successful development of the organisation to date has been
its ability to harness a diverse range of skills and talents to develop
innovative environmental education programmes and services in an enjoyable and
creative environment.

The organisation is currently entering a new phase of strategic development and
long term growth and is now looking for a volunteer PR & Communications
Consultant to advise and assist in the effective promotion of the organisation’s
