'Disco Disco' - new autonomous centre/zone opens up in central Dublin (with pictures)

category dublin | anti-capitalism | news report author Monday July 14, 2003 00:33author by Indymedia Kevin - IMC Éire Report this post to the editors

Dublin's first autonomous centre since the Garden of Delight opened earlier today.
00pikes.jpg

Up on the northside of town today, there was a strange juxtaposition of revolutionaries wandering around. The first lot were recreating a pike march for a Robert Emmet/1798/Bastille Day comemeration. The second lot were a leaderless group of disaffected insurrectionaries, opening the first autonomous zone/space in Dublin since the Garden of Delight next to Christchurch closed its doors in late 1996.

A group of people invited along to the grand opening met up in the sunshine of the Garden of Remembrance, and headed to the location around 2.30pm.

The space is at 41 West Parnell Square, and is called 'Disco Disco'. Why? The building used to be an old disco hall, and the last few remains of the old neon lights, which spell 'DISCO DISCO', are still stuck on the frontage.

At the rear of the Ground Floor, the disco dancefloor can still be seen, although it is a bit worse for wear. Some of the old red sofas are strewn around the back. Mercifully some of the mirrored walls have survived also. So anyone into having a disco revival - it starts here! Get your roller skates and flares out of the closet.

A collective effort from wellwishers and supporters helped to start to get the place in order. They brought paint, hammers, drills, boards, and other DIY & building equipment needed to get the building up to scratch.

The interior of the building is structurally sound, and the upper floors are quite bright and spacious. The top floor unfortunately appears to have been a hangout for our pigeon friends, and is covered in shit and feathers.

Over the coming weeks, the Disco Disco collective will be redecorating, improving, and renovating the space.
