immigration assignment

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Monday May 27, 2002 02:14author by spits - TNH The New Humans Report this post to the editors

I would like to present my essay assignment to you, my people. Since it is a particularly interesting and difficult question, I wanted to share it with you to see any ideas y'all might have, so as to be a sort of dialogue for me to engage with with the hope of enriching my essay. So without further adu here is the question.Just a note, I am not saying that I agree with the way immigration is handled, or that I agree with the language in this question. I just wish to use IMC as a medium to pose this question to people around the world.

-It is a well known adage that America is a "Land of immigrants." Very few, other than First Nation peoples, can claim the United States (turtle island)as their ancestral home.Yet throughout our history the polocies we have adopted to deal with immigrants, whether legal or illegal, have been somewhat "schizophrenic." We have welcomed immigrants in the good times or when we have neede them and then selectivley shunned, deported or imprisoned them when they were no longer useful, wanted or needed. Nor can it be easily argued that we have treated European immigrants the same as we have immigrants from Asia or Latin America.
Shortly after Bush took office he engaged President Fox of Mexico in a dialogue that, among other things, raised the possibility of asylum for illegal immigrants in the US. Talk of loosening on immigration and on immigrants stopped abruptly after Sept. 11. The current wave of nationalism/ anti-immigrationism is not unique to America, as the recent French elections demonstrate.

The essay question is as follows:
Design an immigration polocie that incorporates humanitarian, economic, social and legal values in a way that you believe is fair to those seeking asylum or entry into the United States and, at the same time, protects it's national interests, security or otherwise.

We the people of the United States declare that
1. We live on land that was stolen by our ancestors through the genocide of the former inhabitants.
2. No human being can justifiably be said to 'own' a portion of the earth, we do not inherit it from our ancestors, we are loaned it by our children.
3. Therefore we think that nobody has the right to say who can and who can'not walk on this portion of the earth. What arrogance has he who dares to declare himself master over the earth and the people on it?

Big thing here at the moment being considered is health screening.

Insuring that people coming in aren't carrying anything particularly risky.

It's getting a lot of flak from various groups. Thought I'd have to agree with it personally, having spoken to a nurse who considers her life at risk on a near-nightly basis from exposure to diseases that she has no reason to be innoculated against.

so I can't spell policieiy, piss off. You know what makes me mad about the people on IMC, so many of us are so willing to attack any fuckin one, even and most of the time our brothers is battle. But hey, I guess to assume everyone is beneath and an enemy to the self makes one feel superior and god like. Yes everyone knows nationalism is bullshit, but the reality of the situation no matter how hard you close your fuckin eyes, is that its here and it will be here for awhile. The irony is that the people who would do away with it, people like you, just sit around on IMC bitching and picking fights with everyone else, but never looking at themselves to see their own faults. So I'm sorry that I came to the Ireland IMC.Thanks for nothin you lousy bitches.
