CARRICKMINES CASTLE PRESERVATION GROUP

PRESS RELEASE
27.06.03

'Progressive Democrats, Labour Party and Green Party Representatives Endorse Carrickmines Alternative Plan and Strongly Criticise Government at Public Meeting'

Last night, Thursday 26th June 2003, at Liberty Hall Dublin, politicians from three different parties joined to endorse the Alternative Plan put forth by Carrickmines Castle Preservation Group. The Plan, currently being considered by Minister Cullen, allows for the preservation of the castle site by bending the road and reducing the size of the interchange.

Cllr. Victor Boyhan, (PD) of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council (DLRCC), was virulent in his attack on his fellow councillors for failing to act on Carrickmines:

"It's not that the councillors have done anything
wrong - it's that they've done nothing, and this is the problem. What's happening up in Carrickmines is nothing short of a disgrace.

"No political party has had the courage or the guts to stand up and make it an issue.

"One really has to ask why this particular motorway at this particular location? Why? Because a number of politicians from all political parties are compromised in relation to the route and the way this was decided.

"We can have the M50 and the castle.

Proinsias de Rossa, MEP (Lab), said:

"The response we've been having from the Commission to date, in relation to the Carrickmines Complaint, both directly to the Commission and to the Petitions Committee is an indication that we can get a hearing and that we can force indirectly a change of heart for the Government.

"I've no doubt that the contacts that the Commission have been making with the Department of the Environment and the Department of Transport in relation to this matter has resulted, in part at least, in relation to the decision they've made to finish the two ends and to leave the middle alone until they can come to some arrangement for that.

"The fact that they went to the trouble to appoint an archaeologist is an indication that they are in fact looking at the detail of the case.

"In my view, once they look at the content, they have no option but to come to a conclusion that the Environmental Impact Study Directive was not properly complied with and therefore the Irish State has to take some remedial action.

Ciarán Cuffe, (GP) TD and former Dún
Laoghaire-Rathdown Councillor of ten years said:

"Bending the road strikes a very strong chord amongst the general public - I do believe that this is a feasible choice.

"I also believe that if this is done in association with reducing the scale and complexity of the road junction at Carrickmines, it is possible to find a realistic solution.

"I do think it's remiss of the county council and the National Roads Authority not to be looking in detail at these options at this stage. Because if they had seriously considered these options a year ago we would be a lot further down the road to getting a workable solution.

"We have to face up to the Olivia Mitchells of this world and say we do need to complete it, but it can be done and we can safeguard the castle.

With regards to the Critical Infrastructure Bill,
promised by the end of summer, Mr Cuffe said:

"This can be done without compromising archaeological and environmental concerns."

Aengus ó Snodaigh, Sinn Féin TD, has already backed the Alternative Plan on behalf of his party.
