Galway buses to Shannon demo on Saturday

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday June 18, 2003 02:01author by Anon Report this post to the editors

SHANNON ANTI-WAR PROTESTS ON SATURDAY, 21 JUNE.

On next Saturday, there are a number of anti-war events in Shannon. The major one, a national demonstration, is the 2pm march to highlight the continued use of the airport by the US military and to protest at the occupation of Iraq by US forces - against the wishes of almost all Iraqis.
The Galway Alliance Against War is organising a BUS TO SHANNON on Saturday. It will leave Galway at 10.15 am and arrive back at about 7 pm. To book your place, respond to this by contacting GAAW.

The bus will arrive in time for people to join the Catholic Worker's Movement vigil at the airport, starting at noon. The vigil will focus attention on the forthcoming trial of the 'Catholic Worker 5' who disabled a US warplane and face years in prison if convicted. Participants in the vigil will hook up with the march at 2 pm. (Incidentally, the CW5 are appealing to sympathisers to attend their trial, beginning in Kilrush courthouse on 24 June).

On Saturday evening/night, there will be a Peace Festival at the Shannon Airport Peace Camp, which will include, according to a press statement for the event: roots reggae on one sound system and a second sound system provided by theProtest and Play Collective, featuring the sounds of DJs Fiasco and Eugene. There will be free vegan food courtesy of Food not Bombs, drumming circles, art installations, and plenty of activities for children

Unfortunately, the GAAW bus will be leaving before the festival gets into full swing. For more information, contact [email protected]

Enjoy Shannon but don't forget to vote in the Galway City Referendum before or after you go.

Polling stations are open from 9am to 9pm. Details in the local press.

Alternatively you can send a postal vote to the Nora Barnacle House Museum, Bowling Green, Galway together with a photocopy of some acceptable ID. Your voting preference should be in a separate sealed envelope.

You must be on the register of electors in Galway City to vote.

Do vote, but Shannon is about making sure we aren't walked on by the U.S. It's about saying fuck Bertie Ahern's craven complicity with U.S. imperialism. So, vote!, but get to Shannon!
