Can you write indpendent news if your boss is not independent
World Editors Conference June 8 -11th
The World editors Conference and Expo is taking place in Dublin from the 8th of June to the 11th. It is a large and busy conference with a lot of worthy journalists and proposals, eg.
"The Role of the Newspaper
Society is evolving and questions are being asked about the role of the newspaper. Are there dangers in chasing consumerist trends too aggressively to appeal to increasingly materialistic audiences? Has the time come for publishers and editors to reassess their mission and how they are performing it and to focus anew on upholding traditional values of community and citizenship? Views, case studies and debate"
With the news of controversy over accuracy in the New York Times, which was supposed to be a newspaper who cherished it's reputation for accuracy over everything else. The Independent put Robert Fisk on front of the newspaper several times during the recent war in Iraq but in the same paper widley misreported many other things and never printing retractions or corrections when they or even Fisk got things wrong. I read that the New York times print corrections daily but it took them months to oust their prize winning journalist they had suspicions about. On the Real Face of War the other night, a C4 documentary on media handling of the war, journalist working for corporate media who embedded themselves with the US Army then complained about not being able to get all of there stories out? They and our national newspapers all constantly claim to be striving for the truth and justice but seem not fully committed to it.
From World Association of Newspapers page, a .org site?
Policy/Aim
Defending and promoting press freedom and the economic independence of newspapers as an essential condition for that freedom.
But can you truely do that while still working for a corporation ? It impossible really to have independent media as even imc'ers have personal beefs or opinions but when the decision is taking out of your hands....
(ps hmm i never got around to getting any good ideas on how to cover this but i guess ill try over the next few days, last minute as it is. Although your not suppose to ask for anybodies else help (cos you be cursed for doing so )but im sure theres other indymedias interestd in covering this ,maybe its worth a feature, for the next few days, seems like major deal conference)

Bring your top hats, monocles and copies of “the Scum!”
Globalise Resistance, an Irish anti capitalist coalition that has just returned from the G8 protests in Geneva last weekend, is calling for a picket on the World Newspapers Congress this Monday June 9th. The World Newspapers Congress is bringing together the major editors and corporations behind the global corporate print media industry in the RDS this Monday at 12 noon, in a ceremony to be opened by Bertie and Bono.
PRESS RELEASE
Joe Carolan, GR Spokesperson-
“Many people feel that the corporate media present a biased view of the world. Anti war activists feel that our side of the argument was marginalised in favour of the pro war pundits- many newspapers sided with Bush and Blair’s hollow arguments for war on Iraq- but where are the WMDs? The myth making power of corporate media was seen by many as pro war propaganda, with only a few principled journalists like John Pilger or Paul Foot cutting against the mainstream.”
“But it is not only wartime propaganda that w are protesting against- Print Media also re inforces many stereotypes and myths in daily life about the role of women, the status of refugees and asylum seekers, and the validity of workers taking strike action to defend jobs and services against privatisation. Corporate print media is not a free press- huge corporations like Rupert Murdoch’s News International, Tony O Reilly’s Independent Newspapers and Lord Conrad Black’s Express Group are part and parcel of an economic system that puts people before profit- indeed all three corporations have been involved in attacks on their own journalists and printers unions.”
On Monday at 12 noon, GR will picket the opening ceremony of the World Newspapers Congress at the RDS. That evening at 8pm, there will be a loud and colourful demonstration outside the reception being held for the WNC at the Guinness Storehouse in James Street. Top hats, monocles and copies of the Scum will abound at the Press Barons Ball!
Joe Carolan-
“Trade unionists who have been vilified as dinosaurs and militants, asylum seekers and refugees who have been demonised as scroungers, women who feel that the media peddles sexist stereotypes of their bodies, will join anti capitalists who believe we need an alternative radical press, a true free press from the grassroots.”

Do you not believe in full sentences? Is expressing yourself properly the evil that must be destroyed? I didn't know Indymedia had turned into After Six Joints media.
the gr thing is still on the first list of the newswire it doesn't need to be posted again or if its an update to that same page surely
like response from gr on how it sees wans attempt to get press freedom?
Lazy lazy releases and articles are real annoying
but i living on the continental Eurasian mainland am a little disadvantaged by not having a "English" spell checking computer.
I can do cool letters·¿ñǺª¨¨ though.
perhaps the writer above has the same problem.
anywayz grammur is cool.
and 6 joints can help lots of deal with the real world.
I'd rather keep the corporate media.
It's kind of ironic... "G.I" Joe Carolan and Richard Boyd Barrett are probably two of the biggest media whores in ireland, if they even smell a protest they start cuddling up to the press.
Indymedias censorship team should attend this conference and learn a thing or two about personal privacy. They should stop monitoring who logs onto this site. Ray are you listening to me are you glued to your favourite programme, Big Brother?
