Thursday May 29, 2003 12:09 by Sean Smyth - independant socialist
Once again a Belfast City Bus driver has been assaulted.
This is a typical and expected response after all words a cheap. Over two years ago I made Translink the ATGWU,” GS Bill Morris, Joe McCusker and chairmen of both Ulsterbus and Citybus branches John Coffey, Davey Glover, Northern Ireland Health and Safety Executive and all the political party’s in Stormont aware of a plan introduce by Dublin Bus in 1996 following a report by a working group establish by the minister for justice Mrs Nora Owen T.D. It was called the Edinburgh plan, the main body of the plan was Translink and the union are serious about preventing attacks on drivers they should be calling on the security minister Jane Kennedy to establish a task force that should include all of the above and to fund it's findings. This morning Thursday 29th May on radio Ulster John Coffey chairman of the citybus drivers union ATGWU threaten the withdraw of buses in working class community’s in Northern Ireland as a result of these attacks. Why, these thugs and hoodlums are not from the working class community’s. Talk is cheap, the drivers want action not crocodile tears. Sean Smyth |

The world is a different place, people need to stand up to terrorism now that it's raised its ugly head SO CLEARLY NOW.
Dear Sean,
whats new?
another attack on a bus driver.
I met this driver today and he is extremely shaken by this vicious attack. he was slashed with a stanley knife and received a multitude of cuts.
The new 'welfare officer' is in for a busy couple of weeks.
only protection for train staff?
Bring in evening security personnel
Sean you are right to argue for effective action in cases like this. I think activists in the union must argue for industrial action to bring in cashless busses - Liverpool had these in 1984. That way theres nothing to rob. Teachers unions have taken action when members have been assaulted - mistakenly to get pupils expelled/suspended instead of more resources/personnel to address such problems. This is much more vicious than the attacks teachers have faced.
