Four Catholic Workers conduct Fleet Week disarmament celebration On Sunday, May 25, at about 4 pm, four Catholic Workers, calling themselves the Riverside Ploughshares, went aboard the USS Philippine Sea during the 16th Annual Fleet Week hosted by the Intrepid Museum in New York City. During a tour of the USS Philippine Sea, Sr. Susan Clarkson, Mark Colville, Brian Buckley, and The Catholic Workers said that they came to the Fleet Week event to enflesh the words of the prophet Isaiah to “hammer swords into plowshares.” Tomahawk cruise missiles are long range missiles that fly at a low altitude and therefore are difficult to detect. The USS Philippine Sea has launched Tomahawk cruise missiles against the people of Iraq, Afghanistan, and Yugoslavia. The Mark Colville, who lives at the Amistad Catholic Worker community in Connecticut, father of 6 children, said that “We cannot love neighbor or enemy without disarming ourselves. We cannot serve the poor without defending them against the violence of the state.” We cannot affirm life without standing directly, nonviolently in confrontation with all that deals death.” The Catholic Worker Movement, founded by Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin in 1933, is grounded in a firm belief in the God-given dignity of every human person. Statement and Biographies Follow. Photos available Monday at www.warresisters.org/riversideplowshares.htm Contacts: Riverside Ploughshares Statement We come here today to enflesh the prophecy from Isaiah, “They shall beat their swords into ploughshares and their spears into pruning hooks” (2:4). With hammers we have initiated the process of disarming this battle ship, of transforming this carrier of mass destruction into a vessel for peace. The USS Philippine Sea uses Tomahawk cruise missiles, depleted uranium munitions and the We are trying to follow Jesus Christ’s commandments to love our enemies and In the spirit of Dorothy Day, who co-founded with Peter Maurin, the Catholic Worker in New York City seventy years ago, we try in our daily lives to practice the Works of Mercy, set out in Matthew, Chapter 25. We feel that to follow God’s will we must do more than serve the broken of our society. It is also our duty to challenge, as Christ did, that which causes poverty. Until we convert Susan Clarkson Riverside Ploughshares Biographies “I feel urged to act today because of the exposure I’ve had over the past three years to the charisma of the Catholic Worker. The recent horrors of the Sister Susan Clarkson, (56) was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, England. She has been in her religious congregation for thirty-seven years and has been a member of the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker community in Washington DC since May 2002. “The example of Christ is clear: We cannot love neighbor or enemy without disarming ourselves. We cannot serve the poor without defending them against the violence of the state. We cannot affirm life without standing directly, Mark Colville, 41, is a member of the Amistad Catholic Worker Community in New Haven, Connecticut. He and his wife, Luz, have been married for 13 years and are the parents of 6 children ranging in age from 7 months to 15 years. Mark’s commitment to nonviolence and peacemaking is rooted in the Catholic faith and nourished by prayer and the daily practice of the Works of Mercy. “Thank you to those who have showed us the will of the spirit through their obedience to truth and struggle for justice. To all who are victimized by our complicity, please forgive us.” Brian Buckley lives and works at Little Flower Catholic Worker farm in central Virginia. He was born and raised in Asia, and taught English in Africa with the Peace Corps. “When falsehood and domination are so prevalent in our government, I must stand up for truth and nonviolence. We must disarm and choose life.” Joan Gregory, 70, lives at the Peter Maurin Catholic Worker Farm in New York. |

I usually don't have much time for religious groups, but its really inspiring to see people who have such courage to uphold their convictions, fair play to all of you.
that guy in the picture looked familiar. and here i thought that ciaron had learned how to teleport.
seriously, excellent action from an excellent bunch of folks.
Great news Susan our love and prayers go to you and the group. Eileen.
Well done to all.
But hammering on blast proof missile hatches and throwing blood on a sign IS NOT "disarming" anything on a ship. Now a charge of C4 ...prehaps or attacking the missile controls console.Yes.But then you might get shot by marines obvisouly toooo riskey.Nah! smear paint or ineffectuly tap with a hammer
You are obviously in top form again today - and hardly a tear to discolour your post!
So, tell me, where do you get the 'C4' for YOUR actual factual NutBag 'actions' from? The cyberspace inside your head?
Hey, Buddy, remember to get round to actually thinking up the dedication to our new cover-version of the 'Georgie Busch' song -
http://ie.indymedia.org/cgi-bin/newswire.cgi?id=49840
- if you can take any time off from being soooo ultra-cunning, that is.
By the way, the tactic of limiting your posts to 3 lines in length is a novel but superior method of disguising your lack of syntax, grammar, spelling, etc. - certainly a lot easier than facing that remedial english class your mother keeps trying to force you into, eh? ehh?!?
Bravo, Brother - and always remember the wise old saying, "We've got Samtax!"
As usual a snot nosed leftie is picking on grammer!!!!!BWHAHAHAHAH LOOOOOSERRRR!!!!!!Cant come up with a viable arguement as per usual just insults!!! OK! How to aquire C4. Read the Anarchists Arsenal, the poor mans James Bond ,Semtex,C4s ugly sister by Seymor Lecker, should get you going on your way.Tells you how to make plenty of things that go bang.Or look up how to make and aquire explosives on the internet. please do play with a few formulas,as alot of them are sabotaged that only somone who would know about explosives would know.Since you are such a looooser,no doubt you will find a formula with your hairy loooser friends and hopefully blow yourselves up as well.
"Prehaps" you need to lay off of the monkey-hormones and get more sleep - calm down and stop exposing your frayed nerves to this gentle taunting and banterful NutBag-baiting.
Your infantile showing-off of a range of puerile NutBag-knowledge scavenged from pathetic teenage websites is a tactical own-goal of titanic proportions. It certainly provides a good character reference and much mirth - thanks for that, and sorry about your now-exploded reputation.
I think there could be a career in the British Army for a man of your obvious calibre - the only entry requirement is a routine P4 spelling-test and a brain-casing no bigger than ... agh, fuck it!
You have great courage, you Catholic Worker people.
Great hearts, great minds, just great.
Keep the No to War movement alive until there is no more war.
Love and peace to you and strength to continue.
Look it is a question of mind over matter.
I dont mind your dimwittedness. You dont matter at all!
Did you have a look at the sites BTW?Or are you just flapping in the breeze?
Sorry to me and I would imagine this would encompass anybody on this planet who speaks english, would understand thatnon-violent action, means absolutely NO violence at all, whether it be against man, woman or machine. Therefore they are not really being non-violent.
They are catholics, oh thank god. Now we are saved from the murdering bastards in the US government, maybe they'll be replaced by the child-molesting Catholic authority.
Oh well at least they painted a sign and tapped on some weapons holds. I mean Id imagine those Hammers did alot of damage considering the average weapons carrying craft has enough armor to withstand a direct hit from a HE shell, Damn that hammer attack must have been savage.
Now lets be real kiddies. You guys are not a non-violent organisation. You are representing an organisation which has killed more people than any government could hope to do. You did no real damage to the ship and unfortunately you were not shown the real response you deserve. I just hope they get a proper sentence or have to pay some money.
Lets hope the next cruise missile hits you!
It is the aim of some people to crowd Indymedia with pointless abuse and bickering, making the good stuff harder to find. This hinders the progressive cause.
When people such as lone gunman post abuse, with very little rational argument, it is not worth replying to. He is obviously baiting people to try and get a response so he can post even more crap. Anyone can see this, so please consider whether you really need to refute every ludicrous point he makes.
On Sunday, May 25, at about 4 pm, four Catholic Workers, calling
themselves the Riverside Ploughshares, went aboard the USS Philippine
Sea during the 16th Annual Fleet Week hosted by the Intrepid Museum in
New York City. During a tour of the USS Philippine Sea, Sr. Susan
Clarkson, Mark Colville, Brian Buckley, and Joan Gregory poured their
blood and hammered on the missile hatches that hold Tomahawk Cruise
Missiles. Kneeling on top of the missile hatches, Mark Colville held up
pictures of Iraqi children who had been killed and maimed by US weapons.
Mark read the statement the group had written, and read from the
scriptures. Brian unfurled their banner which read, " Riverside
Ploughshares: Disarm and Choose Life."
The Catholic Workers said that they came to the Fleet Week event to
enflesh the words of the prophet Isaiah to “hammer swords into
plowshares.” They believe that nonviolence will lead to peace, and that
violence will only lead to more violence.
They were cuffed and escorted off the ship into an awaiting
unmarked blue van. All four were released after several hours. The hammers
and banners were confiscated by the authorities, as well as Susan Clarkson's
passport and visa. They told her that they don't want her to leave the
country. We don't know if they will be charged by the federal government, or
if the government try to mimimize the action by ignoring it. Meanwhile,
they are in limbo, expecting any moment that charges will come, or that
Marshals will pick them up. But, it isn't much different from what we are
learning to call normal in this police state.
Tomahawk cruise missiles are long range missiles that fly at a low
altitude and therefore are difficult to detect. The USS Philippine Sea
has launched Tomahawk cruise missiles against the people of Iraq,
Afghanistan, and Yugoslavia. The ship has also been used to enforce the
sanctions against Iraq.
Mark Colville, who lives at the Amistad Catholic Worker
community in Connecticut, father of 6 children, said that “We cannot love
neighbor or enemy without disarming ourselves. We cannot serve the poor
without defending them against the violence of the state.” We cannot
affirm life without standing directly, nonviolently in confrontation with
all that deals death.”
Attached is their statement, quotes and bios, and a picture from the
ship!! A couple of us were able to go on the tour and accompany our friends!
It was my launcher you clowns "disabled"......
You did nothing but leave a mess for us to clean up. ( It only took about five minutes to clean up by the way). A parting thought...... for you and your friends.
War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and the degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.
John Stewart Mill
Both you, and those who support you are a disgrace to my fellow service members who have made the sacrifices that you would not. The terrorists that we are fighting abroad would be here in the states if we weren't making a stand over there. Open your eyes. You claim to be a religious group, but have you read the old testament? Is God wrong? He told the Israelites to fight.....
GM2 Justin P. Stone ( in your stead )
This may be disseminated as anyone sees fit!
I almost forgot...... The "hammering" you did on our launcher didn't even chip the paint. The only thing you guys disrupted was the tours of all of those poor people who waited in line for hours to visit our ship.
GM2 Stone, ( USS Philippine Sea 2000 - 2003 )
Quote: "Is God wrong? He told the Israelites to fight....."
There's a simple set of ten commandments for people like you. Follow them, or stop claiming to be a Christian.
For Risible,
Judge not lest you be judged.
I'd be willing to bet you have not kept the Ten Commandments. Does that mean that you are not a Christian? "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone". Do you know who said that? Look it up...... Why don't you find a real role model to look up to...... Like the most recent Medal of Honor recipient. "Greater love hath no man than this; that man lay down his life for a friend. I'll go ahead and save you the trouble of trying to find the author of the afore mentioned quotes. The Lord Jesus Christ!
I can see why you're alone.
I think you'll find that Northwood Headquarters is a shore base in London and nothing to do with cruise missiles.
And I hope the vandalism in the picture was not done by this so called peace group?
what is your problem ? what did these people ever do to you ? theyre taking a moral stand against mass murder, and fair play to them.
By the way I know this is most likely unnecessary but Id strongly urge all activists (especially teenagers) to stay well away from those bullshit sites that claim to have recipes for Semtex. They dont. Its utter nonsense and potentially very dangerous.
well lets see, breaking into my base and setting off the intruder alarm when I'm trying to sleep of a night duty!
and then theres the disruption at the entrance every time they decide to have a "protest" not to mention the vandalism and litter they leave behind.
