The good bus still rockin

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Thursday May 22, 2003 12:36author by one of the Good Bus - The Good bus Report this post to the editors

Heading to the g8 summit

good bus is go

The good bus has changed its mode of transport from Dublin to Evian. We do not have enough people to get a bus without charging crazy amounts for it.
We will be meeting on Sunday in Rosslare (Dublin people meeting in Dublin first, Sunday morning) and taking the ferry to Cherbourg and a train to Annemasse. This will still cost €200.

We’ve always been very transparent about our situation with people on the mailing list, we were never sure we could get the numbers to do this. We have 15-20 people going and another 15 maybes who didn’t get the money in. We just don’t have the numbers for a big bus and mini busses didn’t make it much cheaper.

So now it’s like that kind of school bus where the kids get collected and hold hands walking to school : ) Possibly without the hand-holding.

We know we always came across as vague because our price was never definite, but without knowing our numbers we could never be sure of the cost. We didn’t want to deceive people and we have no ‘party funds’ to back us up. We have learned a lot from this experience, and hopefully will learn a lot in Evian. Everyone was involved in the organising to whatever degree they wanted to be and knew what was happening each step of the way. We have let the people involved decide which village we want to stay in and send as much information as possible on to make sure everyone knows what to bring and what to expect.

So at the meeting last night we talked about it and decided we all want to continue to be the good bus, and we’ll travel there together, those who couldn’t be at the meeting have shown their support for this idea too.
We have had amazing help and support both from people travelling with the good bus, people travelling alone and meeting us there, and people who cannot go to Evian but liked the idea of the bus.

Anyone who wants to find us in Evian, unless there is a major change (ah the vagueness again, but it’s all up to the people) we will be staying in the VAAAG village ( www.vaaag.org ) in Annemasse and those people who wanted to travel back with us are very welcome to do so. Ask at the reception place and they will know where we are, or look for our flag. Will also put phone number up as soon as possible.

Thanks to everyone who sent us e-mails of support and advice, all those who are playing at or attending the fundraiser tonight, and all the good bus crew.
Still the good bus. Still rockin.

Ps. Don’t let this post turn into a good bus/GR bitching site if yis can help it. Both us and GR have a WAY more important common enemy and it’s waiting in Evian.

The evil bus is only costing each passanger €165. While the 'good' bus is costing €200 each.

I think that it is a shame that some people involved with the 'good' bus could not put their petty sectarianism aside and organise transport together.

If they did this then the cost would be less for everyone!

After all at least there will be there long enough to take part in the counter events and meet a lot of people. The GR bus arrives late, will shuttle people into some SWP dominated meeting and then shuttle them into the SWP section of the demonstration before rushing them home again. Shelling out an extra 35euro for the extra days to actually meet and communicate with protesters from all over the place is well worth the cash

Look, sectarian watcher, we're going for 10 days. Its a totally different trip, a totally different experience. We're leaving on sunday.
Hope everyone's packed : )
We didn't want to travel with GR. that's it, what is your big problem with that? Your bus is full ok.
I've said it up top, didn't it get through? Common enemy in Evian, quit the bitchin.

Thanks everyone for last night's fundraiser. It was great fun and we made plenty of cash to go towards first aid stuff, food and general expenses. I hope you all enjoyed it. Thanks again for all the support and generosity.

We arrived in Annemasse late on Monday night, and have set up camp in the V.A.A.A.G village. Our flag is flying :) and we are helping out in the building up of the village. This is being written in an internet cafe in the town. We hope to post up a full report later today on the newswire once the media tent has been set up.
