Please find beloA list of individuals who are in jail (in the UK, US and elsewhere) as a
result of nonviolent resistance to war and injustice.

The list of prisoners has been compiled by the folks at the US-based
'Nuclear Resister' magazine, an excellent prisoner solidarity tool which has
existed since 1980, providing information on and jail support info. for
people imprisoned, updates on ongoing campaigns, and reflections on life
behind bars.

The Resister is an ongoing chronicle of hope, and its recent issue documents
over 7,500 arrests which have occurred since last fall in
relation to the ongoing war against the people of Iraq, the details of
people who continue to go to jail resisting the U.S. terrorist training
School in Georgia, the story of three nuns facing five to eight years behind
bars for an act of disarmament, and more.

* ARRESTED FOR PEACE!
IRAQ WAR RESISTANCE AT HOME AND ABROAD
by Jack and Felice Cohen-Joppa, editors of the Nuclear Resister

More than 7,500 arrests were reported in the U.S. alone
during anti-war protests between November, 2002 and mid-April, 2003.

The latest edition of the Nuclear Resister newsletter chronicles this
slice of recent anti-war activism that included more than 300 actions
in at least 115 cities and towns in 35 states.

Hundreds of people were jailed from overnight to six months,
and updated names and addresses of current prisoners for peace are
available from [email protected], and soon at
www.nonviolence.org/nukeresister

This is our history! Celebrate it, share it, use it to build
the movement against the new American Empire.

A FREE sample copy of the 16-page double issue tabloid is
available in print only, by request. Please send your postal address
to [email protected]. Your address will not be shared.

This issue also includes feature articles on the recent trial
of Plowshares women in Colorado, now facing 5-8 year sentences;
scores of School of the Americas resisters convicted and sentenced to
3-6 months in prison; Vieques Libre!; Phil Berrigan memorial;
prisoner writings and addresses and more.

The chronicle of resistance published in the latest issue of
the Nuclear Resister reveals the extent to which, early on, protest
included active resistance to an invasion of Iraq. Well before U.S.
and U.K. troops arrived in Iraq, millions of people were
participating in an unprecedented multitude of marches, rallies and
protests across the globe. Also widespread were acts of nonviolent
civil disobedience in opposition to war. A deeply held conviction
against military action in Iraq was shared by many people who had
never protested before, and found themselves moved to engage in
"extra-legal" activities for which they were arrested and hauled off
to court and sometimes jail.

Many blockades, graffiti, sit-ins, unpermitted marches and
other actions expected to result in arrests did not in fact end that
way. In contrast, police in city after city were quick to arrest
people who strayed from the sidewalks or "protest pens," and on
several occasions, simply surrounded large groups of peaceful, legal
marchers and arrested everyone.

Sinn Fein block British Ambassadors residence in Sandyford this morning.
by More Direct Action Thu, May 22 2003, 1:46pm

More direct action against curtailing of Democracy.
There will a rally on May 29th, the date the election was suppposed to take after they were indefinately posponed for the second this year by Blair.
All welcome to attend!

Over 25 members of Sinn Féin from Rathfarnham and Dún Laoghaire along with members of Ógra Shinn Féin this morning staged a protest at the British Ambassadors residence in Sandyford, Co. Dublin.

The protest, which lasted from 7am till 8.30am, was organised to highlight the 'denial of democracy' that Britain's cancellation of the
May 29th elections in the Six-Counties represents. This action is one of a number of protests taking place north and south in the run up to May 29th where a major rally will be mounted at the British Embassy in Ballsbridge.

Speaking during the protest a Dún Laoghaire Sinn Féin representative.
Michael O'Brien said: "We mounted today's protest and blocked the entrance to the British Ambassadors residence to bring a focus and
attention to the fact that the British Government unilaterally and against the views of the vast majority of people in Ireland has cancelled the democratic process in the Six Counties. Our action today is a demonstration of the frustration and anger that exists amongst very many people.

"The disruption we caused today by preventing people driving in or out of Glencairn pales into insignificance when compared to the actions of the British Government in effectively denying democracy to the people of the Six Counties. However we believe it is important that we bring our message directly to the British Ambassador.

"Sinn Féin is determined to continue with these protests and we are calling on ordinary people to make their views known and demand action from their elected representatives to put pressure on the British

Government to reverse it's anti-democratic decision."

Are you talking about Eamonn the playwright who was arrested along with 9 others at the March 1st action?

In fairness, he was a hero in the court that evening when they were setting bail. He spoke to the judge as I imagine he would speak to anyone else, no bending the knee or doffing his metaphoric cap. This normal behaviour had a strange effect upon the judge who appeared to think that Eamonn was being provocative when he was asking totally rational questions. At that appearance he barely got away without a contempt of court charge.

If he is in jail for contempt of court, he deserves our support and respect.

R Isible, why did you move the Sinn Fein post to this thread? It's more like news than most of the crap left up there. Why did you not move the two photo stories which were part of a series of over 20 individual newswire stories about the same event? what's going on?

The SF comments are out of place, I just responeded. There is now an appropriate thread. Maybe you would move them to:

Ciaron O'Reilly accidentally posted the title story twice. The upper/newer one contained the "Sinn Fein comments". God knows why people felt it was appropriate to put those comments on the Catholic Worker story, but they did. I deleted the duplicate title story and moved the comments down to this earlier version of the story.

If you want to whine, whine at the people that posted comments about Sinn Fein on a Catholic Worker story - not at me. Thanks.

I just spoke to Eamon Murphy's lawyer, Eammon was arrested for breach of bail (you guessed it returning to Co. Clare...how constituional is this obligatory banning of folks from a county???). He has a bail hearing this Monday, if he is refused again he will be held until the court case on June 12th.

If so write Eammon Murphy c/- Limerick Prison, Limerick.

In his letter he sounds in good spirits if a little isolated from the rest of the movement...he also reports that the movement has goood cred amongst the prisoners, who follow the reistance at Shannon, court cases etc. closely.
