He has held the following positions: Permanent Representative to UN, New York 1980; Irish Representative on UN Security Council 1981-1982 (and President of the Security Council in April 1981 and August 1982); Ambassador of Ireland in London 1983-1987, and Secretary General, Department of Foreign Affairs, Dublin, 1987 until his retirement in 1995. The esteem (*make you puke, wouldnt it?)in which he is held is reflected in the roles accorded to him both at home and abroad – in negotiating the Anglo-Irish Agreement in 1995 (*sic), in the drafting of EU Treaties as Chair/Representative on the IGC, and as Government representative on the Carlson Committee on the Reform of the United Nations. (*He was also Ambassador to the US, during that time he slandered those who were campaigning for the Birmingham 6 and Guilford 4, by delaying pressure from US politicians he probably ensured that 10 innocent people spent years longer in prison.)
