Irish Activists Travelling To Evian Summit

Feature on plans for the G8 summit in Evian, France this June. Add your comments and links here.

The G8 are returning to Europe in June after fleeing to the Rocky mountains last year in an attempt to avoid the protests that greeted them in Genoa in 2001. The G8 are effectively an unelected world government who dictate the world’s economic and political agenda through the IMF, the World Trade Organisation and the World Bank. Their neoliberal policies of war and profit are destroying the planet and its people. The G8 will meet in Evian, France from the 1st to the 3rd of June. Hundreds of thousands of protestors from all over Europe are heading there to greet them!
Globalise Resistance, an Irish activist network, is calling on all organisations and individuals to sign the call opposing the G8 and encourages people to make their way to the protests and alternative summits that will be held near Evian. Anti-G8 leaflets and trade union motions are available from GR's web pages.

Globalise Resistance is running buses to get there, and an alternative bus known as the 'Good Bus' is being discussed.

I have found a growing interest in both people wanting to go to Evian and also those willing to support it. In West Belfast for example where we had organised feeder marches against the war and prior to that a march in support of the firefighters, the various groups, organisations, unions and individuals whom we have recently worked with were contacted to ask for support and/or participation in Evian. The discussion on the anti war movement to the anti capitalist movement found almost total agreement. In the space of a few hours posters were keenly placed and distrubuted in many local community, womens and social centres, and donations were made that has sponsored already in those few hours six activists from the local area to go, with other unions and community groups still to take it to their local or regional committee meetings. It is that type of response and solidarity that is being forged that is important, as is the growing understanding and discussions of the connection between war and capitalism when talking to the various people and organistaions. Those various {to date} local community groups, individuals, trade union branches, trade union, political parties, solidarity groups, youth groups and others who have supported us were many of those whom we had worked and built up a realtionshaip with in recent times as part of various campaigns in the local area. It is those people who will both lend support or would be prepared to participate in the upcoming event if they are but asked. I would urge any one interested in going to Evian from Belfast they can contact me at above E -Mail. There are anti war groups around Belfast who are orgainisng also mobilisations from their own local areas. We shall see yas there in Evian on whatever bus, train plane or boat you are are taking. Until the G8
