Old Head of Kinsale reclaimed again![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() People's Picnic in defence of public access More than 100 protesters took part in the 6th People's Picnic at the Old Head of Kinsale, Co. Cork Yesterday. The Free the Old Head of Kinsale Campaign held its 6th People's Picnic at the scenic venue yesterday (Sunday) to highlight the closure of public access to the headland. The Old Head of Kinsale is a traditional walk and a place of great beauty which has been enjoyed by generations of people. An exclusive golf course was opened on the headland in 1997 and now the public are now not allowed onto the Old Head. A large gate, razor wire, CCTV cameras and security guards guard the entrance. The Old Head is a well known habitat to numerous species of fauna and flora and a bird sanctuary. It also contains the ruins of the historic De Courcey's Castle. Despite driving rain and strong winds the protesters gathered at the gates. At 2.30pm a number of them succeded in scaling the high walls and fence and the owners were obliged to open the small side gate. The remaining people streamed in and walked the mile or so to the lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula. A small force of gardai were present as usual but the protest was peaceful and there was no trouble. Further details on the Old Head of Kinsale campaign are at http://freetheoldhead.tripod.com |
