The Labour movement in Sligo will mark May Day with a ceremony at the site of the former home of the great Sligo Labour leader John Lynch, in Lower New Street, Sligo

The Labour movement in Sligo will mark May Day with a ceremony at the site of the former home of the great Sligo Labour leader John Lynch, in Lower New Street, Sligo.

The ceremony, which will include the unveiling of a memorial plaque on the site, will be held at 9.00.p.m.on this Thursday evening the 1st of May.

Speakers at the event will include the Chairman of the Sligo branch of SIPTU, Mr John Maree, the President of the Sligo Council of Trade Unions, Mr Hugh MacConville and Labour Party Alderman Declan Bree.

The late John Lynch, was a founder member and first branch secretary of the Sligo ITGWU in 1911. A trusted colleague of James Connolly he helped organise the union in many parts of the country including Derry, Waterford and Limerick.

Lynch was first elected to Sligo Corporation 90 years ago, in January 1913. In March/April/May of the same year he led the workers in the famous Sligo Dock Strike.

He was Mayor of Sligo in 1931,1932 and 1933 and played a leading role in the Labour, Trade Union and political life of Sligo and the North West until his death in 1939.

May Day festivities will continue later in the evening in the Sligo United Trades Club in Castle Street with a ‘celebrate May Day’ session of song, dance, music and poetry.

Protest-vigil at Dutch embassy Thursday May 1, 11am-1pm

40 years ago on May 1st, 1963, the Indonesian flag was raised over West Papua, marking the annexation of West Papua and the brutal suppression of a nation. Formerly run by the Netherlands and for seven months by the United Nations, the world community turned a blind eye as the West Papuans were sacrificed to the interests of “real-politik” and corporate greed.

The question of West Papua is unfinished business for both the United Nations and the Netherlands. The Netherlands continues to be silent on the on-going genocide in West Papua, as it seeks to maintain “cordial” political and economic relations with its former colony, Indonesia.

Vigil on Thursday May 1 at Netherlands Embassy

“NETHERLANDS COMPLICIT IN GENOCIDE"

Vigil at Netherlands Embassy to mark 40th anniversary of Indonesian Takeover of West Papua

11.00am to 1.00pm, Thursday, May 1, 2003

Location: Netherlands Embassy, 160 Merrion Road, Dublin 4

Bring: placards, drums…

When East Timor was taken over by Indonesia in 1975, its former colonizer, Portugal, spoke out and supported self-determination for East Timor. However, the Netherlands has stayed silent on the question of West Papuan self-determination, and thus, as a central party, is directly complicit in genocide.

West Papua, north of Australia, is the western half of New Guinea island. At least 100,000 West Papuans have been killed since 1963. Some observers have put the figure as high as 300,000.

Why don't you do it today, or tomorrow, or whenever you like for that matter, nobody's stopping you and you can be as rad as you like. You can even be your very own Rich boy!

If you want to make suggestions and criticisms about our events, our meetings are open to all, so you can get involved. For some reason I don't think that we take these type of anonymous criticisms on indy too seriously.

you guys are a bunch of wasters. you don't understand real world politics and economics at all. you should travel and see the world then you will see why globalisation is right and good. by the way, the war in iraq was good too, its a shame that the anti war movement is so racist : white people can be free from tyranny, but its ok for Iraqis to be brutalised by Saddam. Get a life.

Hope the guards kick the shit out of the May 5th people, deserve it interrupting everyone elses day. selfish ignorant bastards.

From an Irish Muslim.

I think its a disgrace you people just taking over the city like that, hellbent on causing chaos. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

Why not have a 'Free Party' which is properly organised and policed for the benefit of EVERYONE not just you people!!

For God's sake, someone could get hurt!!

Or is that the plan???

Annie-Body: "Why not have a 'Free Party' which is properly organised and policed for the benefit of EVERYONE not just you people!!"

That's exactly what happens.

This one made me smile. I can't understand why someone could get so upset because a few people dance, socialise, entertain and be entertained for a few hours on a bamk holiday.
Don't believe the hype. It's a party, not a protest and definitely not a protest.
