I was passing the airport on Tuesday and saw a gray Army airplane land at around 1200 or so. Does anyone know what kind of airplane it was and did anyone get any pictures? I drove to the lot and could clearly see U.S. Army but I certainly didn't recognize the type.

Conor and I were up there a while ago.
The first herc has been joined by a second one.
They are at the south west end of the terminal in a fenced off area.
(a recent enough tactic - surely Rummy's plane will be parked in the same spot.)

inside the movable fence we can see the planes, airport police vans, a Garda van and armed Gardai.

In fact we saw armed gardai very close up when we were planespotting.

We had a short discussion with them.
We assured them that we were not carrying spuds. We asked them if they were aware of the contents of some of the aircraft. They said they were not aware. So we told them that some of the 747s would typically carry 28 cruise missiles.
We also told them that -for their own information - they should read the transcript of Dubsky's trial where Dr. Hassan Rubaie testifies about the effects of DU on children.

I asked a third Garda if he knew which Gardai were informed of the contents. It has come to our attention that the Gardai are informed of the contents (but do not inspect them), If this means that Inspector Kennedy was aware of the contents of the planes, then he has a case to answer for perjury as he stated the opposite before Judge Mangan on Dec 18th last.

Anyway, the Hercs.
The Hercs have got refuelling pods on the wings (further out from the engines) as well as the extra fuel tanks (between engines 1 and 2 and engines 3 and 4)

Due to the failing light we couldn't get reg numbers. There was no obvious activity at the planes besides the security. We decided to head home and check in on them in the morning.

We were followed back to Shannon town by the two armed Gardai.

According to Goldhawk in the current issue of Phoenix magazine, there were two hercules being used out of shannon for some time as ground reconnaisance to locate any places on the ground that could be used by terrorists to down one of their aircraft. funny enough this resulted in several trees being removed from the surrounding environs as they were regarded as a security problem. (why?..Someone coud hide in them and fire a rocket Duh!)
well anyway, I know it sounds like a bit of a laugh but the story is worth a read, and whatever the reasons, US planes functioning as spy planes in this country...thats no laughing matter.
