USA: illegal immigrants can be 'detained indefinitely'

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Friday April 25, 2003 17:16author by america, once free Report this post to the editors

US Atty Gen Ashcroft has set out to start the process of more camps for illegal immigrants to be 'detained indefinitely' - is it fascism yet? (i don't throw this word around lightly)

More Illegal Immigrants Can Be Held
Ashcroft's Ruling Cites National Security Issues

By George Lardner Jr.
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, April 25, 2003; Page A06

Broad categories of foreigners who arrive in this country illegally can be detained indefinitely without consideration of their individual circumstances if immigration officials say their release would endanger national security, according to a ruling by Attorney General John D. Ashcroft.

Ashcroft released the far-reaching decision yesterday in denying bond to an 18-year-old Haitian, David Joseph, who scrambled ashore at Key Biscayne, Fla., on Oct. 29 with more than 200 other refugees. Immigration judges had approved the release of about 100 of them.

The order means that groups of asylum seekers and other aliens -- in this instance Haitians -- can be locked up without hearings and without recourse to release on bond. Ashcroft rejected claims that denying them bail on broad national security grounds would violate their due process rights. He said it was not clear they had any such rights.

Until now, the government has jailed individuals or groups seeking asylum for long periods, but has not asserted the right to indefinitely detain whole classes of illegal immigrants as security risks.

oh, it just gets worse.....

I feel your pain, NOT!

Relax. I know change is scary and people don't like it but these people know what they're doing. Just relax, stop worrying, you'll ruin your health.

It is great that you've not actually cut-and-pasted the entire article. However you didn't take the time to write a summary about why you think readers of indymedia.ie should be interested in this piece. Reproducing articles from mainstream news sources with none of your own commentary, context etc turns indymedia.ie into a free publicity annex of mainstream news. This is contrary to the ethos of indymedia which is supposed to be about YOU shaping the news.

Please, don't just use indymedia.ie in this way. If it's interesting enough then write a summary and provide the link. If you can't be bothered to do that then don't force the original and irish-specific material down the newswire.

People here speak as if the GOP had just sprung from nowhere in the last few years and taken over the country. Abe Lincoln was a Republican. The GOP has a fine democratic tradition. The constant use of therms like fascism is an attmept to make mud stick. A brainwashing technique.

YAWN!! the USA has been running a proper immigration control system since the last 150 years. So they have tightend up abit more.Pity they wouldnt go back to the old system where these catogories of people were automatically deported. Anarchists, drug users, communists, prostitutes, and carriers of infectious diseases.[Do check out Ellis island somtime].If the USA had IRELANDS system in place where anyone can show up ,claim persecution in their own land,[of what?],and get free handouts of food,[and bitch&moan about that,as happened in the Knocklisheen camp in Limerick]accomadation, and clothing.Stroll about the place with no paperwork and apply for a job,a car,and insurance[YOU DO require apermenant address for those things].IT would have ceased to exist about a hundred years ago.
Dont mistrue this post as racist[no doubt some will].But this is a FACT of Irish life these days.
HOW are supposed poor[IE no money] documentless[IE no passport, drivers lic,Soc sec, etc] refugees living on Irish state handouts[poor that they are] buying, taxing&insureing cars??Even clapped out 90 regs? This is somthing that does not happen in the US if you wash up on its beaches. And proper order too! Get your paperwork in order and you can live and work over there no problem. And dont blather on about the illegal Irish over there. They have already got a nickname with the US Immigration."Narrowback"The US was smart enough to set up the checkpoint in Shannon to prevent the embarrasment of Irish people being dumped of the planes in orange jumpsuits and manacles.

Thanks to the most crudely partisan decision in the history of the Supreme Court, the nation has been given a President of painfully limited wisdom and compassion and lacking any sense of the nation's true greatness. Appearing to enjoy his role as Commander in Chief of the armed forces above all other functions of his office, and unchecked by a seemingly timid Congress, a compliant Supreme Court, a largely subservient press and a corrupt corporate plutocracy, George
W. Bush has set the nation on a course for one-man rule.

That is correct-they are not US citizens. If one entered Ireland illegally, would they get all kinds of public assistance from the government?

The Government of the Republic of Ireland is responsible for the well-being of every human being on its territory, whether they enter legally or illegally. We have signed up to international human rights treaties, you know.
