Developers move in to destroy unique Cork habitat

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday April 23, 2003 13:07author by Sean - Reclaim the Glen (Cork)author phone Ted: (086) 190 8281 Report this post to the editors

Rare urban sandmartin nests go under the bulldozer

A property developer moved in over the Easter Weekend to destroy a unique habitat on the Northside of Cork. The former Murphy's Quarry at Goulding's Glen is a recognised nesting place for a colony of Sandmartins - a small member of the swallow family which has become endangered over the past few decades.

Photo 1 shows pathway blocked off by Cork City Council as part of its deliberate neglect of the Glen.

Photo 2 shows a view from the ridge of the Glen River.

Photo 3 shows some of the sandmartin nesting sites just feet away from where McSweeney contractors have started excavations.

Photo 4 shows Ted Tynan of the Reclaim the Glen Campaign at one of the sandmartin nesting areas which is under threat.

In January 2002 Cork City Council passed a controversial rezoning motion to allow a wealthy businessman to build 59 houses in an area that has been designated as a 'green belt' for amenity and recreational purposes. 23 Councillors voted for the rezoning motion - only 3 voted against. There is still some mystery as to why so many councillors voted for the rezoning.

After an appeal against the decision by Cork City Council to grant planning permission for the development, An Bord Pleanala agreed it could proceed with certain conditions including one that the sandmartin nesting places be protected. These conditions are now clearly been breached and the City Council Planning Officer responsible for enforcing them cannot be found.

Apart from the building there seems to be an ongoing threat to The Glen with a number of serious dumping incidents and the City Council seem to be going out of their way to aid the general run down of the Glen. Pathways have been deliberately blocked off and the Council have ignored much of the illegal dumping.

Goulding's Glen was a gift to the people of Cork many years ago by Sir Basil Goulding - of Goulding Fertilizers which had started in the Glen in the 19th century. In the 1970s it was developed into the Glen Amenity Park and is one of the natural habitats in the built up area of Cork's Northside. Apart from sandmartins it is also home to Heron, ducks, coot and a number of other species.

If you would be interested in joining the campaign to save Goulding's Glen please contact Ted Tynan at (086) 1908 281.

The latest news is that after numerous complaints by local people a Garda Sergeant from Watercourse Road Station called at the site and ordered the developers to stop work on the site. A temporary reprieve at least. Reclaim the Glen campaign is seeking advice on the next move. We'll keep you posted.

I cannot believe a beautiful area like this with those rare birds nesting can be destroyed like this. Who are these council members and why have they voted in this way? Can their names be published and a way of contacting everyone of them. This is disgusting! Are they being bribed?
Is money changing hands? It must be! Has all of this been publicized in the Cork Examiner? Surely they cannot get away with this.
The vandalism of the council deliberatly dumping on the footpath is unbelievable. What kind of council do you have in Cork? Who are these people?

There were actually three separate votes on this regarding various 'conditions' which were to be imposed. The final vote was proposed by former Fianna Fail Lord Mayor Tim Falvey and seconded by another former Lord Mayor Jim Corr (Fine Gael) and was passed by 26 votes to 3. The voting was as follows:

FOR THE REZONING:

Cllr. T. O'Driscoll (then Lord Mayor) (FF)
Ald. Mairin Quill (PD)
Cllr. Noel O'Flynn TD (FF)
Cllr. Dave McCarthy (FF)
Ald. Terry Shannon (FF)
Cllr. John Dennehy TD (FF)
Cllr. Tom Brosnan (FF)
Cllr. Liam Burke TD (FG)
Cllr. Billy Kelleher TD (FF)
Cllr. John Kelleher (LAB) - current Lord Mayor.
Cllr. Kathleen Lynch (LAB)
Cllr. Bernard Allen TD (FG)
Cllr. Damien Wallace (FF)
Cllr. Tim Falvey (FF)
Cllr. Colm Burke (FG)
Cllr. Michael O'Connell (LAB)
Cllr. Deirdre Clune TD (FG)
Cllr. Jim Corr (FG)
Cllr. Joe O'Flynn (LAB - now Gen. Sec of SIPTU)
Cllr. Donal Counihan (FF)
Cllr. John Minihan (PD - National Chairman)
Cllr. Sean Martin (FF) - brother of guess who?
Cllr. Mary Shields (FF)
Cllr. Michael Ahern (LAB)
Cllr. Brian Bermingham (PD)
Cllr. PJ Hourican (FG)

THOSE VOTING AGAINST THE REZONING:
Ald. Con O'Connell (IND)
Cllr. Johnathan O'Brien (Sinn Fein)
Cllr. Dan Boyle (Green Party)

Just one error in the above list - it should be Cllr. Tim Brosnan (FF) not his late father Tom Brosnan.

Two councillors were either not present or didn't vote: Con O'Leary (IND) and Denis Cregan (FG).

There appears to be a whole host of developers connected with developments in the Sand Quarry and the rest of the Glen Valley. Here are some of them;
Loftus Civil Engineering
Murnane and O'Shea
Val O'Connor - Also runs a funeral parlour in the city
McSweeney Demolition
Coleman Bros.
Donal O'Donovan
You can get their numbers from the directory, please don't be abusive but do be assertive and ask questions like whether owning a bit of land gives them the right to do what they like with it regardless of effects on society and the environment. They will almost certainly try to pass the responsibility on. Don't let them get away with it. We are making a difference here by making lots of noise, please help us keep it up. Thanks

Sand martins migrate to Africa in the winter and move north to our climate when the weather gets warmer. Are they native or immigrants?

Ireland was once uninhabited as indeed was the continent of Europe. Nomadic people came from Africa and moved gradually throughout Europe, eventually settling down in Ireland. You're one of their descendents Wobbly, so your gene pool is rich with noble African genes. You should remember that.

Do Cork councillors read this site? Seems like they have had a rethink despite those dickheads trying to link this to the illegal immigrants issue. Sandmartins just visit, they don't stay and leech off the state!

Perhaps it's a good thing there are people receiving money from the state. I certainly have no qualms about having done it fro the last ten years. It has left me free to develop myself and pursue all sorts of interests, like creating alternatives to the state, that I couldn't have done if I'd had to work full time.
