Report & Pics of Kildare Anti-War Protest

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Sunday April 20, 2003 17:37author by Kev - Co. Kildare Anti-War Group & othersauthor email thekevolution at yahoo dot co dot uk Report this post to the editors

Saturday 19th April: About 90 people marched in Newbrdige to voice their opposition to the war, occupation of Iraq and possible future wars.
44338_1.JPG

The protestors gathered on Morrefield Green at 2pm, and the march proceeded down Newbridge Main Street, with many more joining in on teh route down. At it's highest point there were about 90-100 people on the protest. There was a police presence of two. It's the only march I've ever been on where the traffic actually stopped the march. What I mean by this is that the congestion in front of the march was so bad that it resulted in teh traffic being so slow as to force the marchers to stop several times. Strange experience.

The protest was loud and lively and colorful. Passing cars beeped their support and there was the usual array of chants, badhrans and bongos. When the marchers passed the ofiice of Sean Power TD (FF), people began shouting "Shame, Shame, Blood on your hands" and I heard one shout of "Sean Power we know you, your daddy was a bollix too."

Upon reavhing the Riverbank Arts Centre, the rally commenced. The was music from Pud Barret (who bailed us out with the PA at the last minute - cheers Pud) and Etna & Dave who sang Luka Bloom's peace song and did a few reels.

The speakers were Gerry O'Donaghue (IPSC and school principle), Fr. Paddy Byrne (local radical priest), Ann Behan (environmentalist and anti-incinerator campaigner), Kevin Squires (SP) and Tom Lonergan (SWP/IPSC). In the speeches various points were made about the slaughter of Iraqi civilians and conscripts; the environmental and cultural destruction of Iraq; the shameful role of the media and the government; Shannon; the PNAC philosphy of 'full spectrum dominance'; the fact this is a war for oil and imperialist domination; the instabilty this war has created and the disgraceful role of the US in supporting Israel. Protestors were also asked to remember the role of FF and the PDs and not to forget it during the local elections next year.

Persoanlly I would like to thank everyone who took part, and especially those who worked their arses off organising and leafletting for the demo. Well done to all involved.

The next County Kildare Anti-War Group meeting will take place on Tuesday 29th April in Lumville House at 8pm.

Does the world need 15 photos of a 90 person march? If a picture tells a thousand words you've just written 15,000 words on 90 people. Or close to 200 words on everyone at the demo.

Theres a disturbing trend (I blame that RedJade character) of posting up to 30+ pics from a demo.

Yes if you have a serious of photos of something important (ala assault by PSNI)

but 30 photos of "gu hu" heres a bunch of people protesting is fucking stupid and an abuse of the wire.

Photojournalists shoot 100s of photos and then pick the one or two that capture the essence of what they're documenting.

Can we see that restraint and professionalism from IMC photographers?

Kev - thanks for letting us know what is being done locally; it is important that anti-war marches however big or small are covered. I thought the pictures were lovely.

Nice to hear from you :) You and Jon found a new job yet? Hope all's well.

That is assuming you are the Emily Douglas I know and not her namesake!

If not its nice to hear from you anyway.

No.6 - Ever occur to you that these pics might be important to the people who are in them? More pics the better I say.

Gu Hu.....

okay Kev this isn't yours or anyone elses fucking photo album. Frankly 15 photos of 90 people at a demo is just Nero-esque self n fucking delugence.

If you guys feel so inadequate about your efforts and effectiveness that you have to spam up a newswire with photos of your slack jawed cluiche friends, well then you and yours then have self esteem issues.

This fucking look I took fucking 300 shots on the day kind of shite really has to end. Pick the five photos that you think most suitable capture the day. Giving us the same banner from multipile angles is not news by any stretch of the imagination.

I'm not having a go at your efforts, or your skill as a photographer, but this kind of wank has just got to end it's an abuse of the wire.
