Significant Socialist result in Nigerian Senate election

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday April 16, 2003 16:23author by Kenneth Owende Report this post to the editors

Among allegations of serious vote rigging in favour of the ruling party a Socialist candidate has recieved a huge vote in the Lagos area in the Senate elections.

The provisional results of the elections for the Nigerian national Senate and House of Representatives, held on April 12, are being announced.

In the Lagos West constituency Lanre Arogundade, a founding member of the Democratic Socialist Movement (Nigerian CWI), stood as the National Conscience Party (NCP) candidate for the Senate. This was the first time that the NCP had been allowed to stand in an election.

Lanre received 77,330 votes, 9.64%, and came third behind the AD (party of the Lagos State Governor) and PDP (President Obasanjo's party) out of 30 candidates.

A total of 801,988 votes were cast in this constituency, which is the largest in the country. The Party for Social Democracy, the party sponsored by some trade union leaders, received 266 votes (0.08%).

In the other Senate seats in Lagos the NCP gained 17,142 votes (5.69%) in Lagos Central and 21,582 votes (6.51%) in Lagos East, in both these seats the NCP candidate came fourth.

This is a disgrace that the Irish Socialist Party has links with a Nigerian party. In fact it is a disgrace that any party in Ireland should have international links.

The problem with this country is the big international link we have with Britain in the guise of the occupation of the 6 counties. The less our parties are tied to foreign ones the better.

i repeat what the fuck are you on?do you really think international support and cooperation are a bad thing?do you really think its a sign of imperialism if you develop links of exchange of information or whatnot with likeminded groups in other countries ?if so you really ought to sit in you bedroom and stare at the wall for the rest of you life cos its the way forward and denying it or making up bullshit connotations to it are pointless and youre wasting your phone bill by typing them

I think it is fairly clear that Pat c did not post the 1st comment above. It should be removed.

Pat, why are you so quick to have a go at Socialist Youth denouncing them as stupid? There is no evidence that a SY member put up that post.

Can you not see that by always having a go at SY you may provoke spurious postings in your name?

So which questions excatly weren't answered. As far as I can see JT was arguing for local committess to be set up which he's been doing since last year, yes I saw your magic suppressed open letter, I still can't figure out excatly how you supress an open letter, and SP supporters argued it wasn't the case. Although JT seems alot more open to honest discussion than yourself. (at least a lot less sneering and arrogant) You should read lenins pamphlet on left communism its more relevant today than ever.

Pat, I'm not so sure about that, there are lots of people that spend their time just stirring shit on this site.

I have been subjected to a bit of abuse recently myself, my advice is just to ignore it they enjoy it when you react to them.

Come on everybody lets grow up. if we want serious discussion, please simply don't bothering to reply to such obvious and ridicuos bullshit.

Well done to the Nigerian socialists. Keep up the good work!

What are you on about? Is the SP sernding 15 year old on to indy to attack people? On the other thread Cannons one, dont feel you have to go to it) SP members continuously misrepresented me.

Both Pat C and Chekov have fallen foul of anonymous attacks and attacks by those who are openly SP/SY. This is certainly the case in the messages on the John Throne Letter thread.

How is anybody supposed to know the age of SP/SY members they are debating with? Particularly when so many of these Vanguardists behave in such a Juvenile fashion.

10% in an exam isn't great but 10% (77,000 votes) in a Nigerian election is significant. Remember Nigeria is hardly the model democracy, activists are regularly threatened for demanding basic democratic rights. Congrats to all those involved

Also it is First Past the post system that they use in Nigeria so 10% is v good
