news report
Friday May 10, 2002 16:15 by Ben O Reilly
Everyone that was at Pearse Street yesterday is probably aware of the presence of Garda photographing the crowd from the windows of the station. Does anyone have photo's or video of this? If yes, please publish it on the site. Expose the cowardly faces behind the camera!

Not only were the guardai photographing from the windows of pearse street, at least one of them was in the crowd taking photos of protesters particularly those carrying placards. When one of the protesters recognised him and pointed him out, the guard quipped something about the particular protester's choice of "dealer". The guard was wearing dark combats over guarda regulation motorbike boots a dark waist-length jacket and a grey baseball hat. He had two professional cameras around his neck and if you didn't know better would have taken him for a press photographer. He was wandering around in the crowd at the start of the protest. Can anyone verify this and if so does anybody have footage or photographs of the alleged cop. If so could they please post them on this website and expose this disgraceful behaviour and the alleged guard involved.
I saw what I thought was a police spotter (with a notebook) together with a photographer going openly around the crowd. When someone took a photo of them they disappeared sharpish. There is a photo out there somewhere.
I'd say it was an attempt by the Gardai to photograph people who often visit protest and marches and my also be an attempt by them to single out certain people for beatings if ever another attack occurs.
will publish it soon
If you are being filmed or photographed by police you are entitled to copies. Just walk over and ask. They have to give you a place / contact number where you can obtain copies. There may be a charge for this (€10 or so).
Also if you see someone in plain clothes (filming or not) and you suspect they are a police officer, if you ask them they must admit to being a cop (if they are one).
We did this in Sellafield, a plain clothes guy was standing filming us and someone asked him was he a cop, he said no, then they said "You know if you are a police officer you are obliged to tell me..." and then the plain clothes cop said "well, em, yes i am actually."
