Brand Cool or Brand Fool? - Today is Green Party No Logo Day Today, 10th April 2003, is Green Party 'No Logo Day'. Green Party TD, Eamon Ryan, launching the No Logo Day said, "We are asking students to cover any logos with the 'no logo' badges which have been distributed to every secondary school throughout the country. In addition we have sent out educational packs outlining four action projects. Today, 'No Logo Day' is the closing date for competition entries." "The projects include a fashion challenge to kit someone out as stylishly as possible for less then E25, to design their own logo and poster for the day and complete a research project to examine where our clothes come from, where our money goes and what the conditions are like for those making the clothes." "From visiting schools to talk about the idea, it is clear that the pressure to wear branded clothes is a real issue for young people. Teachers also know that work often comes ahead of homework to help pay for the clothes. Alternatively, parents are brought under intense pressure to meet their children's brand clothing bills. For the most part the inflated price paid for these brand products pays the corporate advertising budgets used to promote them." "The main aim of No Logo day is to get young people to question the marketing pressure that they are put under. We also hope the research projects will raise their awareness for the need for certain standards which could govern working and environmental conditions in our increasingly globalised world economy." Mr. Ryan said that in May there will be a national No Logo Day awards presentation where prizes will be presented to the best school projects. Winning entries will be displayed at the Convergence exhibition in Temple Bar and samples of the No Logo Day entries will be uploaded onto the nologoday.com website for the rest of the world to see," concluded Deputy Ryan. |

And I also agree that in general the 'no logo' movement is a positive thing as it is anti capitalist and anti establishment. But we have to look deeper than just logos, we have to look at what exactly causes exploitation and not get caught up in spending all our time avoiding logos.

I agree with you that some self development techniques may be expensive, but in the long term it worth ever Euro.
Don't leave money get in the way.
The alternatives to a corporate, consumption lifestyle are a lot cheaper than buying a bunch of shite you don't need.
Consumption is sold as freedom but it means slavery.

Yes, the system is corrupt, destructive and unsustainable. But most people don't seem to mind that as they watch Man United (plc), sip their diet coke and dream of the newly advertised car they just might be able to buy this year if they get that raise in their corporate job.
While many, many people live like this, people are not just sheep or cattle to be manipulated for their own good - either by corporations or those who would save them from corporations. People have at least the potential for free choice, and helping them to realise this freedom is important.
If your very identity comes from the brands and products that you consume, then what hope have you of even thinking of an alternative, never mind working towards one.
Freedom starts from within, and raising awareness about brands and logos will help people become aware of other, perhaps more important issues too.
Sure, work to change the system and the outer world. But work to change people's inner worlds as well. The two are inseparable.
Have you ever thought that the 'no logo' brands are made in the exact same sweatshops as the logoed clothes.
It is not logos that supress people it is the system, capitalism.
