Drogheda against the war stage Die-In Drogheda Against The War General press release. 7/04/03 Drogheda against the war group stage successful local demonstration. Members of Drogheda against the war travel to Hillsborough demonstration. Drogheda against the war group to mobilise Louth-Meath area anti-war activists for Shannon demonstration. Local press invited to travel to Shannon demonstration. The Drogheda against the war group staged a successful demonstration in front of St. Peter's church on West St. on Saturday last, 5th of April. After a short march around the town centre there was a rally in front of St. Peters with speakers from the Drogheda against the war group and the steering committee of Irish anti war movement. The speakers highlighted the Irish government's betrayal of democracy by allowing the use of Shannon airport by US military personnel, the role of the media, the effects of the MOAB bomb and the future of the Irish anti-war movement. The climax of the protest was the "Die-in" where people lay down on the road to simulate the effects of the MOAB, accompanied by the sound of an air-raid siren. The slogan "war is disruptive" was raised as an explanation for the "Die-In" which had traffic all along West St. and Narrow West St. at a standstill. As a follow on from Saturday's demonstration, several members of Drogheda against the war are travelling to Hillsborough to protest against the visit of George W. Bush and Tony Blair. We are disgusted at the idea of the world's two biggest war mongers coming to Ireland to talk about "peace". On Saturday next, 12th of April, we are running a bus to Shannon to protest at the continuing use of Shannon airport in the war against the Iraqi people. We are hoping to mobilise all those in the Louth-Meath area who are opposed to our participation in the war effort for this latest national demonstration. Anyone who wishes to travel on with Drogheda against the war to this event should contact us on [email protected]. It is important that as many people as possible travel to this event to show the government that anti-war sentiment has not gone away. In allowing the US to use Shannon airport to transport military personnel, the Irish government is guilty of aiding and abetting the murder of nearly 1000 Iraqi civilians to date. We are extending an invitation to representatives from all the local media groups to travel with Drogheda against the war to next Saturday's demonstration.
