Protests in Derry

People assembled on Saturday 5 th April, at Derry's Guildhall for the regular protest against the war. The speakers highlighted the incongruity of Bush and Blair planning to vitit Belfas to talk "peace" with the blood of the people of Baghdad still dripping from their hands. There was a march through Derry City centre. "Free Derry Corner" had "Bush Not Welcome" added to it. People in Derry do not lightly modify this icon of the Civil Rights campaign. Buses from Derry on Monday will take people to tell Bush and Blair know what we think of them.

People assembled at Derry's Guildhall for the regular protest against the war.

The speakers highlighted the incongruity of Bush and Blair arriving to talk "peace" with the blood of the people of Baghdad still dripping from their hands.

The rally was followed by a march along what has now become a "traditional route" through Derry City centre.

After the march we found that someone had added "Bush Not Welcome" to the message on "Free Derry Corner". People in Derry do not lightly modify this icon of the Civil Rights campaign.

There will be buses leaving Derry on Monday (from the Guildhall/Foyle St at 1:30 - 2:00 pm) to travel to Hillsborough Castle to let Bush and Blair know what we think of them.

To the people of Northern Ireland - do whatever you can to make the Bush monster unwelcome. He has recently stated that this mission is related to Christianity. Throw eggs, tomatoes, whatever you can do to disgrace him. He is on a mission to change the world. He has no trouble sleeping at night. He feels he is righteous and doing God's work. This man is pure evil.

I'd like to commend the citizens of Derry for their plans to give Resident Bush a grand welcome. In the U.S., Junior keeps dissenters penned into areas called euphemistically, "Free Speech Zones." I trust the people of Derry will not allow that to happen. I'm looking forward to watching the show. Give him hell, my Irish brothers and sisters.

I DON'T IF OR HOW MANY OF THESE CORPORATIONS DO BUSINESS IN IRELAND, BUT THEY ALL SUPPORT BUSH. DO NOT SUPPORT THEM! THEY ARE: KRAFT FOODS, WAL-MART & SAM'S CLUBS STORES, UNITED PARCEL SERVICE, EXXON/MOBIL OIL. SPREAD THE WORD AS FAR AS YOU CAN & HIT THESE PEOPLE IN THE ONLY PLACE THEY CAN FEEL IT. THE BUSHES ARE NOT AMERICA. THEY SILENCE DISSENT. EVEN NIXON DIDN'T DO THAT. AMERICA IS A COUNTRY THAT WOULDN'T EXIST, WERE IT NOT FOR DISSENT. THE MEN WHOM WE NOW REFER TO AS THE FOUNDING FATHERS WERE REGARDED AS TRAITORS BY THE COUNTRY IN WHICH THEY HELD CITIZENSHIP. DISSENT, & THE FREEDOM TO EXPRESS IT WITHOUT FEAR, IS CONSIDERED HEALTHY BY MOST AMERICANS. DEBATE IS ALWAYS ENCOURAGED WHERE AMERICANS GATHER. ONE OF THE FOUNDING FATHERS, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN, RECOGNIZED THAT FREEDOM IS A 2 EDGED SWORD & ALWAYS COMES W/A RISK (AS DO MOST THINGS OF VALUE). HE ONCE SAID "THOSE WHO SACRIFICE LIBERTY FOR SAFETY DESERVE NEITHER LIBERTY NOR SAFETY". I HAVE NEVER BEFORE FELT SHAME IN BEING AMERICAN. I WILL HATE BUSH FOREVER FOR MAKING ME FEEL SUCH A THING.

He's an insult to intelligence period!!!

He's tried his best to destroy the american way!!!
When this is all over he WILL be held
accountable for his war crimes, using depleted
uranium for the artillery will contaminated iraq

Reading this article and the comments of the people of Northern Ireland have made me hopeful again. Here in the States, the citizens are becoming more and more afraid to say anything. And if we do the White House turns a deaf ear or the Republicans call us names or committe crimes against those who dissent (just ask the Dixie Chicks). I'm so glad the rest of the world, including Ireland, are keeping up the protests.
Thank you Ireland. You make me proud to have Irish blood.

When Bush was elected, it was widely thought that the Americans had closed the eight years of warmongering waged by the Clinton administration from Somalia, Haiti, and Bosnia to Sudan and Afghanistan as well as years of attacks against Iraq and the continued pressure for economic sanctions against Iraq.

President Clinton actually won a peace prize for bombing Milosevic and President Clinton's popularity rating were sky high! My how this must embolden a like-minded Bush!

Well, it's obvious that President Bush isn't a new start, but engaged in the same old policies that brought the attacks against the African Embassies and the 9/11 attacks.

When you really look beyond the American Republican v. Democrat party system, the only real difference between Bush and Clinton is their views on taxation. Well, that and Bush is not a very good communicator.

Until the American voters revolt against the old Democrat and Republican parties, there will be more of the same Clinton/Bush administrations.

I believe that we are at a balance point. The forces that arrogantly want to act as a new Roman Empire ( Bush et al) and take over the world are definitely poised and ready. But as is said in the Peace Movement here in the States:We ( the people, the protesters) are the other force. In order to do this, we must unite world-wide. You in Europe seem to be listened too ( except by Blair) better than we are here in the states. Here huge rallies are not even covered on corporate TV. I was at the anti-Inaugural rally on the day Bush took was sworn in (illegally) to the office president. Without the all the many votes that still needed to be counted!!!! and this huge and enormous rally was not even covered by the news. I was in shock as I came back from D.C. that all these thousand upon thousand of protestors to the Bush coup had not been given coverage!!!!! That was eye -opening for me. Now I wish you well in your protests of the "bloody Two" in your country. It is at the point, world-wide, that we must protest not so much to change recalcitrant, arrogant, war-mongering, imperialist governments - - -who refuse to listen or be changed. we must protest to save our souls. We must protest because we now this war is immoral!!! We must protest only to let these cold, uncaring regimes know that we, the people of the world DO CARE that civilian grandmothers, grandfather, women, men and children are being barbarically killed. We must do it for our own souls!!!!! Abhikara

The hypocrisy escalates as Bush lands in Northern Ireland while refusing to meet with Nobel Laureate Mairead Corrigan Maguire. Maguire has been in Washington since Bush's war began-fasting, praying daily in front of the White House and getting arrested with others for peaceful civil disobedience. She wrote a formal letter to Bush requesting a meeting, but he ignored her.

Hey George, you could have opened your front door to learn about the peace process in Northern Ireland, but instead you are once again AWOL on a useless photo op with Tony!

There are many in this country who are passionately opposed to Bush's senseless, destructive policies in the middle east, and we are very afraid of where he is going next. It feels as if we're on the Titanic and the imposter captain (he killed the real captain and threw him overboard) is heading straight for the iceberg. We don't understand how this insane fundamentalist and his cabal have taken over our country.

We pray for you in Ireland and for your struggles, and we hope that there will be a day, in our lifetime, when people can learn to live peacefull with one another.

Give Bush hell when you see him - and let him know that there are many Americans who support your peaceful cause.
