The prosecution of a man for burning the Qur'an shows how Islamic blasphemy codes are becoming embedded in criminal law. Coming up with a legal definition of 'Islamophobia' will accelerate this process, says Sam Bidwell.

Solar farms are an ecological disaster. Birds frequently fly into them, mistaking them for water, while electrocution and incineration are common. But you won't hear about this in the mainstream media, says Chris Morrison.

Misinformation on RTE 1 this morning

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday April 02, 2003 12:39author by Orla Drohan Report this post to the editors

This morning on RTE 1's Leaders Questions program journalist Mark Hennessey outrageously claimed that there was only "four or five hundred" at Saturday's anti war demonstration in Dublin.

This morning on RTE TV's televised program of Leader's Question's in the Dail, journalist Mark Hennessey claimed that there were only "four or five hundred" at Saturday's Anti War demo.

In the Dail this morning Joe Higgins (Socialist Party) challenged the Taoiseach over the use of Shannon airport. Back in the studio two journalists were asked to give their impression of the debate. Mark Hennessy said the Taoiseach felt he could get away with his position considering there were only "four or five hundred" people on the streets last Saturday in comparaison to Feb 15th.

It is outrageous that such misinformation be paraded as fact on the national broadcaster. If anyone has seen the program it would be a good idea to telephone RTE to complain as I have done.

T.D.'s Tony Gregory, Joe Higgins, Liam Twomey, Seamus Healy, Finian McGrath, Gerry Cowley and Paudge Connolly have meanwhile put down a motion for discussion in the Dail this week regarding the extra US troops passing through Shannon and calling for the Government to call in the British Ambassador and US envoy immediately and lodge a formal complaint about the slaughter of civilians in Iraq.

From their own site:

Guiselines for a basis to complain: http://www.rte.ie/about/organisation/complaints_more.html

General page on making a complaint: http://www.rte.ie/about/organisation/complaints.html

Given that 'Campfire' Des Geraghty (SIPTU AND RTE Authority) gave a speech to four or five hundred people weekend, perhaps he would also like to know about this misinformation?

Does M Hennessy still work for the Examiner?

As far as I know, Mark Hennesy is a political correspondent for the Irish Times.

There was actually less than 150 people at the march by the way lads.

Paddy there were at my estimate 15,000 people at the anti war march in DUBLIN on SATURDAY, as anyone who was on the march can vouch for. There was also a demonstration at Shannon on SUNDAY, but I'm not sure how many were at that one.

RTE Online's own report of the protest states:

"An estimated 20,000 people have taken part in an anti-war demonstration in Dublin."

"Organisers of the rally said earlier they expect at least 20,000 to attend the event. A Garda spokeswoman doubled an earlier estimate of 4,000 to 8,000."
