Bring bells, whistles, colour,a smile! Gather at the Garden of Remembrance, Parnell Square at 6pm tomorrow (Friday 28 March) for the first Critical Mass cycle of 2003. We're back on the last Friday of every month until September! (this is some text off a CM email, for those who havn't heard of it) What is Critical Mass? We are the cyclists of the city, cycling together in a large group. The idea is to show how much nicer Dublin would be (for cyclists and everybody else)if the streets were full of cyclists all the time. What exactly do we do? We cycle. We go in one large group at about one mile per hour, which has the effect of taking over the road. Traffic is calmed, pedestrians can cross the road without running, you can hear the birds sing and you can converse without shouting, and you think 'wouldn't it be great to have this all the time? So it's really a type of demonstration? Not really. Only in a society immersed in car-culture could people think that cycling around is a demonstration. Cars take over the streets every Who's in charge? You are. There is no steering committee, no treasurer, no chairman - we just Do we get a permit from the Corpo or the Gardaí? No. We don't ask anyone's permission to use the streets of our city, we do Is this legal? Are we supposed to go two-abreast? It is 100 per cent legal. Cyclists have a right in common law to use the streets (motorists don't). The rules of the road suggest that cyclists go What if we get aggro? Almost everyone is good-humoured about Critical Mass - most people are amused and curious. Smiling and waving at people helps this a lot. Ring your bell, or blow a whistle. You will get the odd tightly-wound plonker who revs their engine or shouts abuse - smile and wave at them too. To make sure everyone is safe, stay together in a group, don't let anyone Other Information... The cycle generally lasts for 30 or 40 minutes. Sometimes we plan it out |

Yay!!!
In solidarity with the current anti war protests it might be an idea for Critical Massers to bring a few 'no war for oil' type banners, highlighting the fact that if more people cycled the demand for oil might drop, especially when people are calling for a boycott of American products and picketing TOP Oil lets get them commuters to picket their cars.....just an idea, I'll be there with me whistle any way......stay out of them bus lanes y'all.
There's also a Belfast critical mass happening tomorrow (Friday). Meeting at 5.30ish at City Hall. Otherwise, same as above.
Actually thats 5PM sharp!
Arrive early...........
6 pm it will have absolutely no impact at this time on a friday, learn from the activists in San Francisco if you are serious, which does not seem to be the case
the point about riding during the rush hour has its merits, - for those on the more extreme anti car/car culture elements on a cycle, it does hold up more traffic.
the problem is that not everyone sees cm as an anti car protest, but as a celebration of bikes - and 6pm is a time (after work - some people on the newswire have jobs to keep) when more BIKERS can make it.
it is therefore apparant that your idea of timing for the cycle depends on your idea of what cm is - something different for each person.
therefore the analysis that cm dublin "is not serious" is fully wrong.
maybe a discussion at the cycle r.e. the future of cm is needed.
