'JOE DUFFY', A SHOULDER TO CRY ON!!!!!!!!

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday May 08, 2002 16:07author by LD - None Report this post to the editors

Why did people waste national air-time on this show discussing useless information on the points of who organised the press conference, the demo tomorrow etc.. If there are things to be ironed out by those who are involved since Monday surely the Joe Duffy show is the last place to do this. It seems to me Duffy did a good job getting yis all off the point!!

author by Andrewpublication date Wed May 08, 2002 16:21author address author phone Report this post to the editors

I got a call from a researcher for the Joe Duffy show this morning. It seems a certain Joe Carolan of GR/SWP had been ringing them and telling them that GR had organised Mondays demo and could he therefore get some airtime. They had loked at the indymedia site and noticed that there was some controversy about the role of GR and wanted to do an item on why GR were claiming to have organised something that they had not. I've had about 10 media calls over the last day, nearly all the later ones had been told by someone that GR was the organiser or one of the organisers for Mondays party. In fact, despite the fact that they had clearly been given a version of events by someone in GR/SWP, two of the journalists were unaware that a group called Reclaim The Streets even existed!

I agree that this sort of coverage is not terribly useful but lets be clear that the blame for generating it lies with GR/SWP. It's a rather old leninist trick to pull back room manipulations and then when they are exposed make a big fuss about the need for 'unity'. If GR didn't deserve the Monopolise Resistance label before they certainly do now!

Before anyone say it, I'm not an anarchist.
But those who wanted to know why so many people hate the SWP, now should have the answer.
Something must be done. Reclaim the Streets organizers should sent letters to the media and report what has happened, how GR has tried to spread lies about the Party and their role in it, etc. All the people who came along are going to be outraged when they read that they were at an event orchestrated by the SWP/GR!

Tomorrows so call protest is being organized by the swp, I advise everyone not to go. They are trying to take credit for other peoples work they had little or nothing to do with the protest on monday and if the protest goes ahead it will be a complete shambles, it will make us look in the wrong because the Gardai will be completely civilised unlike on monday because every media group will be there tomorrow and it will look like we are trying to provoke the gardai. No doubt they will then say we had done the same thing on monday. We have to prevent this from happening.
We cannot let the swp get away with this mock protest all they are trying to do is get support, so more people will be fooled into voting for them at the elections.

it doesn't matter about Joe Duffy- the drama keeps the story spinning and shows that there is different strands out there. It also shows that like mainstream politics there are people ready to make oportunistic efforts for gain.

What I heard of Joe duffy until 2 pm was really good, after this while nothing may change immediately, at least in the back of peoples minds they will realiase when lumping every one together that there is differnce out thereand that I feel is good

It may have been called by the SWp, but its important that as many people as possible go along. So bring along your own placards, or avoid the SWP banners - do something to dissociate yourself from them, but turn up. Because if its poorly attended the papers won't say it was boycotted because of the SWP, they'll just say that no-one cares about the police attacks.

"Tomorrows so call protest is being organized by the swp, I advise everyone not to go. They are trying to take credit for other peoples work they had little or nothing to do with the protest on monday"

All the more reason to go with your own banners, opinions, bulletins, thoughts, etc.. or do you want to leave it to the S.W.P. - play straight into their hands (and the cops hands) and do nothing.

"and if the protest goes ahead it will be a complete shambles, it will make us look in the wrong because the Gardai will be completely civilised unlike on monday"
"No doubt they will then say we had done the same thing on monday. We have to prevent this from happening."

They can't say they did the same on Monday because the whole country has seen The Star, Sun, Times, etc.. and RTE, TV3 also. All that publicity, people beaten on the streets for partying and we should do nothing leave it to the S.W.P. ????????????????????
Do we never take to the streets again?

Those who heard Pat Kenny and who read the Irish Indo today may have noticed quotes from the Students' Union President of UCD who supported the Gardai and who criticised students for being involved in protests. Just to let you know that several students have written to the Union President demanding that he apologise and retract his statements. People have also rang him to let him know what they think of his views. How can a student representative not defend his membership after they are attacked by the Gardai and are hospitalised?

My heatr bled for that yankee bird on Joe Duffy today, she had some cheek moaning about Garda brutality If she or her layabout friends hit a cop in the states she would be locked up for 5 years if she wasn,t shot first. Who is she to moan she's studying here so she has nothing to contribute to this country as she'll piss off out of here when she finishes her studies, and as for these Fiachra and Oisin types what do they expect if they decide to sit down and block a public street and stop me from going about my business as I am entitled to do. If you ask me the Gardai didn't crack open enough skulls on Monday.anyone arrested should have their Dole money stopped then we'll see how they like it.

There's a lot of talk of bringing cameras to demos, but for loads of us a ditigal camera is just way too expensive. For on-the-fly reporting a normal camera is expensive too (developing an entire film, just for the 10 or so of a demo in one hour, then scanning, etc.).

I know that its *really* bad karma to post ADs on Indymedia, and I hope that I'm not starting something here... but if you've got a credit card or a friend in the UK you can buy a Digital Camera from there for just 40 quid (uk quid).

It's called the Digital Dream L'Espion Camera and you can see it at the end of this link (below -->)

The resolution sucks, but it's perfect for indymedia posts.

i cannot believe the flaming cheek of the swp to claim they organised this protest.
i know people who are in the swp who go to reclaim the streets demos and vice versa but this just confirms my suspicions that the swp are just a bunch of bandwagon jumping idiots.
they are merely using this for publicity as they did with the critical mass arrests in september.
no doubt their bleeding heart biased tabloid shall be making a song and dance about this.

I have one. They're about the size of a matchbox.
The advantage is that they're small enough to hold in one closed hand and keep out of sight.

I'll post some of the pics I took on Monday up here tomorrow.

Overall, including delivery it cost me just over €80, but some shops are selling them in town now as well.
