Derry 22 March 03 - Protest against the War

Rally at Derry's Guildhall and march around the city.

People in Derry continue to oppose the attack on Iraq. A rally took place in Guildhall Square, Derry on Saturday afternoon (22 March) Between six hundred and a thousand people attended. The speakers included: a trade unionist, a young man from Youth Against War, a representative of Artists Against War, a doctor from the local hospital whose family live in Baghdad and someone from FEIC - who campaign against arms manufacturing in Derry. Then a march took place around the city centre.

People in Derry continue to oppose the attack on Iraq by USA and UK military.

A rally took place in Guildhall Square, Derry on Saturday afternoon (22 March). There was an attendance of between six hundred and a thousand people.

The speakers, who were introduced by journalist and veteran Civil Rights campaigner Eamonn McCann included:
- local trade unionist Eileen Webster,
- Seamus O'Reilly of Youth Against War,
- Marion Donnelly of the Workers Party,
- Jan Caspers and Joe Duggan of Artists Against War,
- Jim Keys of FEIC (Foyle Ethical Investment Campaign), who are best know for their opposition to the presence in Derry of missile manufacturer Raytheon.
- Dr. Abdul Aljibouri (from the local hospital) who talked of his family in Baghdad.
- Colm Bryce of Socialist Workers Party

Then a march took place around the city centre. The marchers had short sit-downs at several points along the way, including in front of the Richmond Shopping Centre, in the middle of Craigavon Bridge and on the dual carriage way adjacent to the river.

The protest ended at 5:00 pm.
