Huge Iraqi Chemical Weapons Factory Found -Fox News (unconfirmed)

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Monday March 24, 2003 02:38author by hunter Report this post to the editors

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. forces have found what they believe to be a "huge" chemical weapons factory near the Iraqi city of Najaf, about 100 miles south of Baghdad, Fox News and the Jerusalem Post reported on Sunday.

The Fox report, which cited senior Pentagon (news - web sites) officials, said the facility was uncovered by the 1st Brigade of the Third Infantry division as they advanced north toward Baghdad.

The 100-acre complex is adjacent to military barracks and surrounded by electrical fence, the report said.

U.S. troops are said to be holding the general in charge of the facility, Fox reported. No immediate confirmation of the report was available.

(more lies or what?)

U.S. Finds Suspected Iraq Chemical Plant

WASHINGTON - U.S. troops have found a suspected chemical factory in Iraq (news - web sites) and officials were trying to determine late Sunday whether it was involved in making chemical weapons, U.S. officials said.

The plant is near the city of An Najaf, which U.S. troops reached Sunday on a push to Baghdad, the officials said. President Bush (news - web sites) and other U.S. officials say ridding Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s regime of chemical and biological weapons is the main objective of the war.

Saddam's government denies it has any chemical, biological or nuclear weapons or programs to produce them. Asked at a news conference in Qatar Sunday about reports of the chemical plant, Lt. Gen. John Abizaid of U.S. Central Command declined comment. He said top Iraqi officers have been questioned about chemical weapons.

"We have an Iraqi general officer, two Iraqi general officers that we have taken prisoner, and they are providing us with information," Abizaid said. If the plant is confirmed as a chemical weapons factory, it would be the first find by the U.S.-led invasion force validating U.S. allegations that Iraq still has weapons of mass destruction.

BBC are saying the site is 160km south of Baghdad
The reporter said this as far as they are concerned is unconfirmed. He also made sure to mention that because of the tough day the U.S have had, ambushes, POW's shooting down of aircraft that this is just the news they would need.

Interestingly enough Sky reported this an hour and a half before BBC, they also had a spokesperson from the Pentagon.

Very ?????

According to Sky the UN have come out and said that they are not aware of any chemical weapons sites in the area!

Sky are now referring to this story as a "suspected Chemical factory"

This is according to Sky from a Jurusalem Post Journo saying he was there on Sunday.

A 100 acre site would hardly have been missed by the UN inspections teams that were succesfully combing the country until the US embarked upon this illegal war.

It would have been visible from the air let alone by a military satellite and there is thus no chance that it was "suddenly discovered".

Scott Ritter who was chief UN arms inspector for at least 5+ years in Iraq in the mid to late 90s
(and who happens to be republican) said they had destroyed 90-95% of all weapons of mass destruction
including all capability to produce such happens.

He has consistently come out against this war, and said the most recent stuff about WMD is total lies.
The reason he said the figure is 90-95% is because it is like if you produced accounts for a huge corporation,
you can never accurately count every 'penny' as it were. But he was in no doubt, that the Iraqis had any
means to produce such weapons any more.

It must be remembered that it was British and US companies that originally built the chemical weapons factories
and supplied the chemicals.

We can be sure these claims on Fox news are completely bogus and conviently come at a time just as the war
machine is beginning to slow down, and all the predictions of human disaster by peace activists and
retired generals alike are coming true.

The first suspect thing about this story is the source, FOX news.
I've seen too much of Brian Kilfeather and his fellow desk jocks to have any faith in their propoganda.

I've never seen a station to run so enthusiastically with stories full of
"it has been reported that..."
"Sources believe it may be..."
meaning "Ari Fleischer told us to say..."

and a 100 acre site "suddenly" discovered? yeah, that's well dodgy.

What I'm concerned with these sites about is what they'll do to many industrial sites.

Bombing any industrial site (whether it makes plastic or cannon shells) can be a really bad idea.

Most Iraqis are dependent on river water for drinking, due to the destruction of water treatment and distribution networks.

Its bad enough there's more sewage in them from the bombing of sewage works.

bombing a riverside industrial site will lead to major toxic releases into the rivers which will then poison the people downstream.

(see Serbia 1999, NATO bombed the Zastava car factory in Kragujevac causing major toxic releases)

That's not a very smart bomb.
