Symbolic protest in a ludicrous location more like
And I speak as someone who was there

author by OK - SPpublication date Fri Mar 21, 2003 14:50author address author phone Report this post to the editors

I wasn't there myself, but I think it was a good idea to highlight the people that are to gain from the War on Iraq, ie companies like Top Oil.

People passing by would have seen the protest and it would have been brought home to them that this is a war for oil.

just to agree with the above and note that the protest had nothing in particular to do with the WSM though delighted to support any and all non violent actions against the war

Go and annoy someone worthwhile. The main loser for this sort of rubbish is the person who leases the garage.I suppose some cunt trying to sell a few papers and sweets has blood on their hands too?Go to their head office.A few eejits standing at petrol pumps isn't going to achieve a fucking thing.

I agree that people holding a protest outside a petrol station alone will not change the world. BUT it will raise profile of the fact that this war is a war for oil. Top Oil are benefitting from refeulling in Shannon. I want at Top Oil yesterday, but I'm sure most (probably all) people there would support the rights of people working for the company for decent wages, conditions etc. The workers in Top Oil and the Iraqi people have a common enemy- the owners of the company. Yesterday's protest raises the profile of that company's role in the war, to escalate the protest workers in Top Oil should be encouraged to take action.

I talked to the guy who owned the garage, he was anti war too.
Look, we could have walked to the headquarters in the middle of an industrial estate about half an hour away, we looked into it.
If you're going to buy or sell a product you have to think about the ethics of the company you are supporting. We wanted him to do was ring the headquarters and tell them what was going on, tell them he didn't support their actions either. He was afraid they wouldn't supply him anymore.
This way people who drove past could see which company it was that are supplying the planes. They were mostly very supportive. Some cars that were going to pull in didn't, and we got people rolling down their windows to shout support.
I think it was worthwhile just for that. Everyone should be doing what they can instead of whinging about what others are doing

Well Done to all involved. Great non-violent resistance action. Supporters of Dublin Catholic Worker blocked a Top Oil truck on Burgh Quay on Monday afternoon during an office occupation of the Irish Aviation Authority.
Keep up the great work.
In peaceful loving solidarity,
Damien
